Adventure on the Volga
World Rivers XII: Europe’s Longest River
The journey begins in Andreapol, still in a world of forests, lakes, and dark soils. The landscape appears compact, enclosed, almost Nordic. But after just the first few waypoints, the space opens up, the forests recede, and the river landscapes grow wider. At first, the Volga appears only as a distant feature, but the further south you glide, the more it becomes the central theme of the entire journey. Starting in Tver and Yaroslavl, the Volga begins to reveal its characteristic geometry: wide stretches of water, light-colored terraces, and tranquil banks. The cities lie like islands in an orderly cultural landscape, and from the cockpit, you get the feeling of following a historic axis that has shaped Russia for centuries. The farther you fly, the more noticeably the atmosphere changes. The forests become sparser, the fields larger, the horizons wider. From Saratov and Volsk onward, the southern Volga region begins—a landscape that appears brighter, drier, and clearer. The terraces stand out more prominently, the river bends become wider, and the cities lie like bright hubs along a vast river. The stretch around Volgograd is where the journey reveals its historical depth. The terraces of Mamayev Kurgan, the broad expanse of the Volga, the steppe to the west—everything feels like a transition between history and geography. From here on, the landscape becomes calmer, more expansive, almost meditative. The Volga sheds its urban density and opens up into the vast southern expanses that stretch all the way to Astrakhan. The flight to Astrakhan is a slow glide into another world. The banks become more irregular, the first delta branches appear, and the landscape begins to branch out. From the air, the Volga Delta looks like a silvery-blue net opening into the Caspian Sea—a transition that is not abrupt, but rather like the river exhaling. The final waypoints take you along the Sulak Peninsula, over light-colored coastal terraces and the wide mouth of the Sulak. The landscape is now dry, vast, and clear—a typical scene of the Dagestan coastal plain. Landing at Makhachkala-1 (UKYA) feels like reaching a fixed point on the edge of the Caucasus—a technical, peaceful conclusion to a journey that began in the northern forests and ends in the Caspian lowlands. For simulator pilots, this journey offers a complete geographical narrative: the lake landscapes of northern Russia, the cultural regions of the middle Volga, the terraced landscapes of the south, the steppe and semi-desert, Europe’s largest delta, the Caspian coast, and the threshold of the Caucasus. And it possesses a historical depth that can be discerned from the air: trade routes, ancient cities, terraces, battlefields, steppes, nomadic territories, and delta ecology. It is a journey that does not feel like a flight, but rather like a slow crossing of an entire continent.Specifications:
