Vol 10 - BC Costal Range
■ Tour Overview Departure: Vancouver/Boundary Bay (CZBB) Arrival: Bella Coola Airport (CYBD) Flight Distance: 310 nautical miles Duration: Approximately 3 hours
The British Columbia Coastal Range traverse from Vancouver/Boundary Bay to Bella Coola captures one of British Columbia's most dramatic geographical transitions. This aerial journey aboard the versatile Bonanza G36 begins in the metropolitan Fraser Delta and culminates deep within the Coast Mountains, following ancient indigenous trade routes and modern highways that thread through some of Canada's most spectacular wilderness.
The route traces the legendary Sea-to-Sky corridor initially, ascending from tidewater through temperate rainforest zones toward alpine peaks. Pilots experience the geographical drama that shaped British Columbia's development—from the Capilano River's suspension bridge crossing to the turquoise waters of Garibaldi Lake, locked behind ancient lava dams. The flight path follows Highway 99 through Squamish and Whistler before departing civilized corridors to venture into the true wilderness of the Chilcotin Country.
Cultural significance permeates every segment of this traverse. Coast Salish peoples, including the Squamish and Lil'wat Nations, established seasonal camps and trade networks throughout these valleys for millennia before European contact. The modern route intersects with their traditional territories, from the salmon-rich rivers of the coast to the hunting grounds of the interior plateau.
