■ In this Pack - B747 SINGAPORE TROPICAL In September 1998, Singapore Airlines unveiled something bold: two Boeing 747-400s stripped of their traditional navy blue and gold corporate livery and reborn in an explosion of tropical colours.

The “Tropical Megatop” livery was certainly not discreet: vivid orange flowers, palm tree motifs and flowing designs enveloped the fuselage in a celebration of Southeast Asian exuberance, transforming these jets into flying art galleries.

Created to launch the airline's revolutionary Skysuite First Class and Ultimo Business Class reclining seats, these aircraft, 9V-SPK and 9V-SPL, immediately became legendary at every airport they landed at.

But beauty could not protect them from tragedy. On 31 October 2000, during the fury of Typhoon Xangsane over Taipei, 9V-SPK mistakenly attempted to take off from a closed runway under construction, crashing into equipment and killing 83 people: the first and only fatal accident in Singapore Airlines' history.

The surviving sister ship, 9V-SPL, which we present here in Tamal Palfi's superb repaint, was immediately stripped of its tropical colours and returned to the standard livery. For the next fifteen years, Singapore Airlines rejected all special liveries, as the trauma was still too fresh.

This package revives that brief, brilliant moment when the airline dared to be bold, celebrating not tragedy, but the creativity that made these jets unforgettable: a tribute to what might have been for aircraft that deserved a longer and happier life.
