History by Air – D‑Day: The Normandy Invasion is a story‑driven add‑on for Microsoft Flight Simulator that turns your cockpit into a front‑row seat on 6 June 1944 and the brutal weeks that followed. A narrated flight and curated journey through the birth of the Western Front in Europe.

This mission runs for about 70 minutes and is meant to be flown low and slow—around 500–1,000 feet and 90 knots—so that coastlines, beaches, hedgerows and villages become recognizable pieces of the battlefield beneath you. You depart from Caen–Carpiquet (LFRK) and follow a pre‑planned route you can fly by hand or on autopilot, giving you freedom to orbit key locations, pause, and explore without losing the thread of the tour. ■ Historical Mission Overview From the air you trace the full arc of D‑Day and the Normandy campaign: the deception of Operation Bodyguard around Caen, the last‑minute weather decision that saved the invasion, and the daring night assault on Pegasus Bridge that opened the eastern flank. You then follow the shoreline over Sword, Juno and Gold, watching the narrative shift from British and Canadian landings and specialized “Funnies” tanks, to the building of the Mulberry harbor off Arromanches and the crucial link‑up of the beachheads.

Turning west, you cross Omaha and Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc and the American cemetery above the bluffs, while the narration walks you through the near collapse at Omaha, the Rangers’ climb up the cliffs, the more fortunate landings at Utah, and the immense naval armada that made the assault possible. Inland, you overfly Sainte‑Mère‑Église, Carentan, Brécourt Manor and the scattered drop zones of the 82nd and 101st Airborne, seeing how paratroopers, glider troops and pathfinders turned chaos into a fragile but decisive lodgment behind German lines.

The final part of the tour leaves the beaches behind and dives into the larger Normandy battle: the hedgerow hell of the bocage, the fight for Carentan and the Cotentin, and the drive on Cherbourg, where your mission concludes at Maupertus after passing over the battered port that the Allies so desperately needed. Throughout, the add‑on blends historical detail with visual context, helping you understand why terrain, weather, timing and logistics mattered as much as courage and firepower. Immersive Historical Narration Designed for sim pilots who enjoy purposeful flying with depth: it gives you a clear, flyable route, a historically grounded narrative, and the freedom to explore each scene from the air—so you can experience D‑Day not as a static textbook map, but as a living landscape unfolding beneath your wings.
