2.2/5 (76)

The Mil Mi-8 (NATO reporting name: Hip) is a medium twin-turbine helicopter, originally designed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s and introduced into the Soviet Air Force in 1968. In addition to its most common role as a transport helicopter, the Mi-8 is also used as an airborne command post, and reconnaissance platform. Along with the related, more powerful Mil Mi-17, the Mi-8 is among the world's most-produced helicopters, used by over 50 countries. As of 2015, when combined the two helicopters are the third most common operational military aircraft in the world. The Mi-8 is constantly improving and the newest version still remains in production in 2000++.

With this addon, Romantic Wings brings this iconic helicopter to life for Microsoft Flight Simulator, so you can relive the great moments and dangers of helicopter operation in the 1960s, up to 2020. 11 liveries are included in this pack:

  • --Slovak Airforce,---Czech Airforce,
  • --United Nations, ---Hungarian Airforce,
  • --Indian Airforce, ---Mexican Police,
  • --Polish Government, ---Ukraine Emergency Service,
  • --Russian Police, ---Russian Emergency Service,
  • --Russian Airforce.

There are several cargo options for the helicopter available, so a meaningful flight from A to B with loading and unloading may be played. A complete HEMS (emergency service) pack is in preparation. For firefighting a Bambi bucket is installed and the water drop may be initiated and stopped by pressing buttons on the sticks of pilot and co-pilot and on two more buttons on the panels.

Navigation can be done via an integrated GPS and via panel instruments. All cargo and equipment options may be selected on a facility board in the cockpit and in the cargo bay.

There is a full documentation PDF file included in the pack. If you are on X-Box and don't have access to it, just drop me a line and I send you a link to it. Please use the integrated onboard checklist and the recommended collective and cyclic settings.

X-Box users please connect a simple mouse to one of the USB ports of your X-Box S/X to make all user interactions possible. The Mil Mi-8 is very complex and cannot be easily flown just with the controller

Since Microsoft/Asobo did not yet supply the functionality for helicopter autopilots in their SDK, the model has not yet been fitted with autopilot and damping functions. This will be introduced as soon as there will be a corresponding SIM update available.

The Mi-8 is a multi-use military helicopter produced by Russia’s Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant. The twin-engine rotorcraft took its maiden flight on July 7, 1961 and it was introduced in 1967. Designated the reporting name “Hip” by NATO, it is used primarily for medium-lift transport and assault support. It is also used as a gunship, a mobile C2 (command and control) platform, and an ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) data collections aircraft.

The Mi-8 was primarily used by the Soviet Union upon its release and then subsequently sold to the militaries of more than 80 other countries. The airframe, including all variants, ranks as the most produced helicopter in the world, with more than 17,000 built.

The Mi-8 is piloted by one or two and can carry up to 24 troops with combat loads, 8,800 pounds of internal cargo, 8,800 pounds of externally sling-loaded cargo, or some combination. It measures 60 feet, 4 inches in length, stands 18 feet, 6 inches tall, and it has a 5-blade main rotor system with a diameter of 69 feet, 9 inches. The rotorcraft is powered by two Klimov TV3-117MT turboshaft engines that each produce up to 1,950 horsepower. It has a range of 308 miles, a service ceiling of 16,000 feet above sea level, and climbs at 1,770 feet per minute. It cruises at 150 miles per hour and has a top speed of 160 mph.
