The Sikorsky H-34 (company designation S-58) is an American piston-engined military helicopter originally designed by Sikorsky as an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft for the United States Navy. H-34s served, mostly as medium transports, on every continent with the armed forces of 25 countries. It saw combat in Algeria, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and throughout Southeast Asia. Other uses included saving flood victims, recovering astronauts, fighting fires, and carrying presidents. It was the last piston-engined helicopter to be operated by the United States Marine Corps. A total of 2,340 H-34s were manufactured between 1953 and 1970, including the license productions in the UK and France. The Sikorsky S-58 was developed as a lengthened and more powerful version of the Sikorsky Model S-55, or UH-19 Chickasaw, with a similar nose, but with a tail-dragger rear fuselage and landing gear, rather than the high-tail, 4-post pattern. It retained the nose-mounted radial reciprocating engine with the drive shaft passing through the cockpit placed high above the cargo compartment.

With this addon, Romantic Wings brings this iconic helicopter to life for Microsoft Flight Simulator, so you can relive the great moments and dangers of helicopter operation in the 1960s, up to 2000. 22 liveries are included in this pack:

  • --US Rescue, ---Japanese Navy,
  • --French Navy, ---US Navy,
  • --Aircrane, ---US One,
  • --SAR Germany, ---US Antarctica,
  • --German_Army, ---Belgian Airforce,
  • --Italian Navy, ---US Airforce Rescue,
  • --Netherland Navy, ---LAOS Airforce,
  • --Thai Airforce, ---South Vietnam Airforce,
  • --US Marines, ---Argentina,
  • --US Navy VC1, ---Israel,
  • --Royal Navy, ---US Coast Guard. There are several cargo options for the helicopter available, so a meaningful flight from A to B with loading and unloading may be played. A complete HEMS (emergency service) pack is in preparation. For firefighting a Bambi bucket is installed and the water drop may be initiated and stopped by pressing buttons on the panel.

Navigation can be done via an integrated GPS and via panel instruments. All cargo and equipment options may be selected in the cockpit and in the cargo bay.

There is a full documentation PDF file included in the pack. If you are on X-Box and don't have access to it, just drop me a line and I send you a link to it. Please use the integrated onboard checklist and the recommended collective and cyclic settings.

X-Box users please connect a simple mouse to one of the USB ports of your X-Box S/X to make all user interactions possible. The Sikorsky S58 is very complex and cannot be easily flown just with the controller

Since Microsoft/Asobo did not yet supply the functionality for helicopter autopilots in their SDK, the model has not yet been fitted with autopilot and damping functions. This will be introduced as soon as there will be a corresponding SIM update available.

The S-58 is a single-engine, piston-powered, multi-role, military helicopter developed and manufactured by American rotorcraft company Sikorsky Aircraft. S-58 is the internal Sikorsky Aircraft company airframe designation of the H-34. The helicopter took its maiden flight on March 8, 1954 and it was introduced later that year. Piloted by two, it can carry up to 18 passengers.

Sikorsky developed the S-58 internally, basing it on their earlier S-55 model. The company initially planned the S-58 to be an antisubmarine platform for the United States Navy. They subsequently adapted it for several different types of missions.

The helicopter served the militaries of nearly two dozen countries and has flown on all seven continents. During the S-58’s military operational tenure, it performed the roles of assault support, troop and cargo transport, anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and training. It saw service in several conflicts, including the Vietnam War and the Six-Day War. The helicopter was developed into dozens of variants and performed several non-military roles, including logistical support (including in Antarctica), passenger service, and NASA support. The S-58 is one of the most important and renowned helicopters in the history of rotorcraft due to the extensiveness of its use. Some private examples remain in flyable condition.

The S-58 features a 4-blade main rotor system, a 4-blade anti-torque tail rotor, and a fixed, wheeled, standard undercarriage. It measures 47 feet, 2 inches in length, stands 14 feet, 4 inches tall, and has a main rotor system diameter of 56 feet. It is powered by a single Wright R-1820-84 Cyclone 9-cylinder, radial piston engine that develops up to 1,525 horsepower. The S-58 has a range of 190 miles, a service ceiling of 12,000 feet above sea level, and a climb rate of 1,500 feet per minute. It has an in-ground-effect hover ceiling of 9,600 feet above sea level and an out-of-ground-effect hover ceiling of 5,500 feet above sea level. It cruises at 97 miles per hour and has a maximum speed of 122 mph.
