4.5/5 (64)

The Noorduyn Norseman was designed and built by Noorduyn Aircraft Ltd., a Canadian aircraft manufacturer. The company was founded in 1928 by Dutch-Canadian aircraft designer Robert B.C. Noorduyn, who had previously worked for Fokker and Bellanca. The Norseman was one of the first aircraft designed and built by Noorduyn, and it was an immediate success, with more than 900 examples of the aircraft being built between 1935 and 1959. Noorduyn Aircraft continued to operate until 1986, when it was acquired by Canadair and merged into the parent company.

The Norseman is a single-engine, bush plane that was used primarily for cargo and passenger transport in remote areas, such as the Canadian North and Alaska. It was used extensively during World War II by the military, and many examples of the aircraft are still in operation today. The Norseman is known for its rugged construction and ability to operate on rough, unimproved airstrips. In Microsoft Flight Simulator, the Norseman is a highly-detailed and accurate representation of the real-world aircraft, with realistic flight dynamics and performance. It's a versatile and reliable aircraft that's well-suited for use in remote, challenging environments, and it's a great addition to any virtual pilot's collection.

The Norseman is a single-engine, high-wing utility monoplane designed and manufactured by Canadian aircraft producer Noorduyn Aircraft. The company developed the Norseman specifically for tough bush flying in Canada and Alaska. Intended to be able to portage people and all types of cargo into and out of austere destinations in all types of conditions, its design allows operators to easily mount wheels, skis, and floats on its undercarriage. It took its maiden flight on November 14, 1935; to prove its power and versatility, this first flight was with floats.

The Norseman proved an immediate success, with pilots throughout Canada quickly adopting the aircraft. It enabled the pioneering of a number of locations in Canada, and Noorduyn manufactured just over 900 of the airframe during a production run that lasted from 1935 to 1959. In addition to its civil roles, the rugged and spacious Norseman served the Allied forces of World War II in a variety of missions.

The Norseman is powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 9-cylinder radial engine producing 450hp on the Mk I aircraft. Later models, notably the Mk IV, used the Wasp S3H-1 engine which provided a much more robust 600 horsepower at takeoff.

The Norseman has a range of approximately 900 miles, a cruising speed of 130 miles per hour, and a top speed of 155 mph. It climbs at almost 600 feet per minute and has a service ceiling of 17,000 feet above sea level.

Reliable, versatile, and powerful, the Norseman left its mark in history as the original bush plane in Canada and Alaska, and it remains an aviator favorite for flying anywhere in the world.
