The C-130E Hercules is a four-engine, high-wing transport aircraft produced by aerospace company Lockheed of the United States. The design was based on a 1951 United States Air Force requirement for a tactical military transport aircraft able to operate from unimproved airfields. Lockheed’s design, which took its first flight on August 23, 1954, satisfied this requirement, and in so doing created one of the most enduringly iconic aircraft ever produced.

A number of variants ensued after its introduction in December of 1956, including the C-130E, which debuted in August of 1962 and served in all American conflicts from the Vietnam War through those of the 21stcentury, including in Afghanistan and Iraq. The C-130E has served both military and civilian roles that include transport, assault support, medical evacuation and transport, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) gathering, aerial refueling, weather reconnaissance, aerial firefighting, and many others. It is flown by two and can carry up to 92 passengers, cargo up to 42,000 pounds, or any combination.

The Hercules features a straight main wing with a span of 132 feet, 7 inches, a traditional empennage, and a fuselage that incorporates a hinged rear loading ramp. It is powered by four wing-mounted Allison T-56-A-7 turboprop engines that produce up to 4,200 horsepower each and turn 4-blade, constant-speed, reversible propellers. The C-130E has a range of 1,438 miles, a ceiling of 19,000 feet, and cruises at up to 345 miles per hour.

The Lockheed C-130E is one of the most storied aircraft ever produced due to its balance of power, cargo capacity, ruggedness, and overall versatility. From its cockpit, aviators can fly this ship low and slow, push it into tight turns to bring it in for a tactical landing, or just cruise the heights.
