The KC-46 Pegasus is a twin-engine aerial refueling and military transport aircraft developed and manufactured by American aerospace company Boeing. The aircraft, adapted from the company’s 767 commercial airliner airframe, took its maiden flight on September 25, 2015 and it entered service in 2019.

The KC-46 Pegasus is a next-generation aerial refueling and transport platform developed to provide full-spectrum in-flight military refueling as well as strategic lift capability. Boeing started the program in response to the United States Air Force’s KC-X tanker initiative to replace aging tanker aircraft. The Air Force awarded a contract to Boeing in February of 2011 for development of the Pegasus.

The KC-46 features a state-of-the-art fuel transfer system comprising a telescoping boom that is remotely steerable by an operator onboard the tanker. An aircraft in need of fuel positions itself behind the Pegasus and the tanker’s boom operator steers the “flying” boom to connect with the trailing aircraft’s in-flight refueling receptacle. The aircraft can transfer more than 200,000 pounds of fuel to other aircraft during a single mission.

The KC-46 can also be fitted with multiple wing air refueling pods (WARPs), wing-mounted systems with retractable hoses tipped with drogue receptacles for aircraft equipped with in-flight refueling (IFR) probes. This allows the Pegasus to refuel multiple aircraft simultaneously.

The KC-46 Pegasus also performs military passenger and cargo transport operations. The aircraft can carry up to 114 passengers, 58 patients, 18 standard pallets, 65,000 pounds of cargo, or some combination.

The KC-46 Pegasus is piloted by two and measures 165 feet, 6 inches in length, stands 52 feet, 1 inch tall, and has a wingspan of 157 feet, 8 inches. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4062 high-bypass turbofan engines that each deliver up to 62,000 pounds of thrust. The Pegasus has a range of 7,350 miles, a service ceiling of 40,100 feet above sea level, a cruise speed of 530 miles per hour, and a top speed of 570 mph.
