The 170B is an all-metal, single-engine light aircraft produced by Cessna Aircraft Company of the United States. Evolved from earlier iterations of the Cessna 170 family, including the 170A and the military version, the L-19/O-1 Bird Dog, the B model was introduced in 1952.

The 170B features conventional fixed landing gear, a traditional empennage, and a high main wing with a span of 36 feet and a dihedral angle of three degrees. The wing includes slotted flaps that can deflect up to 40 degrees—and they prove very effective. Power for the four-seat aircraft comes from a six-cylinder Continental C145-2 engine generating up to 145 horsepower connected to a two-blade propeller.

The Cessna 170B has a cruising speed of 120 miles per hour, a top end of 140, and stalls at 52 mph. It climbs at 690 feet per minute and has a service ceiling of 15,500 feet above sea level.

One of legendary aircraft producer Cessna’s most enduringly attractive designs, the 170B is a true workhorse, of many occupations. It’s a great trainer, given its fine balance of handling and forgivingness. The 170B has also proven itself as a utility machine, for both civilian and military applications. Most of all, it’s a fantastic touring airplane, due to its great cockpit that grants an excellent field of view.
