The C172 (1956 model) is a single-engine, unpressurized, light utility aircraft with seating for up to four, including the pilot. It first flew in June of 1955 and was introduced into service in 1956.

The original C172 established itself as one of the most versatile and forgiving airframes in general aviation, widely used for pilot training, private ownership, and recreational flying. The all-metal design features a high-mounted cantilever main wing, a conventional tail unit, and a fixed tricycle undercarriage—making it one of the first light aircraft to popularize this safer landing gear configuration.

The 1956 C172 measures 26 feet, 11 inches in length, stands 8 feet, 9 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 35 feet, 10 inches. It is powered by a Continental O-300-A 6-cylinder piston engine that produces up to 145 horsepower and drives a 2-blade fixed-pitch propeller.

The aircraft has a range of approximately 558 miles, a service ceiling of 13,000 feet above sea level, and a climb rate of approximately 720 feet per minute. It requires a take-off distance of 865 feet and a landing distance of 590 feet. It stalls at 54 miles per hour, cruises at 121 miles per hour, and has a top speed of 144 miles per hour.
