The D228 is a German twin-engine, turboprop-powered STOL (short take-off and landing) utility aircraft. The prototype took its maiden flight in March of 1981 and serial production models entered service in the summer of 1982. Several versions have been developed, including modern variants with advanced powerplants, digital flight controls, and state-of-the-art avionics. Piloted by two, the D228 can carry up to 19 passengers in typical configurations. It has been used by civil and governmental operators throughout the globe for more than four decades and is a preferred choice for difficult routes with short and unimproved runways throughout all types of environments.

The aircraft boasts an advanced, purpose-developed wing with exceptional lift, drag, and stall characteristics. To create the STOL-optimized wing, engineers balanced aspect ratio, planform, twist, and flight control surfaces to create the wing design. Engineers then developed a fuselage to mate to the wing, a boxy design that can be easily configured for passenger, cargo, or specialty applications.

The D228 has proven to be an exceptional multi-role aircraft notable for its versatility, ruggedness, and reliability. The D228 features an unpressurized cabin, a high-mounted cantilever main wing, a retractable tricycle undercarriage, and a standard empennage. It measures 54 feet, 4 inches in length, stands 15 feet, 11 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 55 feet, 8 inches. It is powered by two wing-mounted turboprop engines, each of which delivers up to 775 horsepower and turns a 5-blade, constant-speed, fully-feathering, composite propeller.

The aircraft has a maximum range of 1,468 miles, a maximum endurance of ten hours, and a service ceiling of 25,000 feet above sea level. It has a take-off run of 2,600 feet and a landing run of 1,480 feet, both measured at sea level. It stalls at 85 miles per hour and it cruises at 257 mph.
