AIRCRAFTVINTAGEOPEN COCKPITKLEMML25

4.9/5 (16)

The Klemm L25 was produced in around 610 units and 30 variants between 1928 and 1941. Almost forgotten today, the aircraft was flown by many famous aviation personalities and, de facto, was the standard sports aircraft of the time and an important part of European aviation history. The L25 achieved numerous records and competitions and was used on spectacular flights, for example by the famous German aviatrix Elly Beinhorn on a flight around Africa and a round-the-world flight. The L25 was exported to numerous countries worldwide. Licensed versions were produced in the USA under the name Aeromarine-Klemm AKL-25 and in Great Britain as the British Klemm L25C Swallow or British Aircraft Swallow.

The Klemm L25 is a cantilever low-wing monoplane made entirely of wood with an open tandem cockpit. The fuselage, horizontal stabiliser and wings are planked with a thin layer of plywood. All control surfaces and the wings from the rear spar upwards are covered with fabric. The undercarriage consists of a tubular steel construction with rubber suspension and a rubber-suspended tail skid. It is powered by an 80-horsepower Hirth HM 60 R2 4-cylinder, inline piston engine mated to a 2-blade, fixed-pitch propeller. It has a maximum range of approximately 350 nmi, a service ceiling of 15.750 ft above sea level, a cruise speed of about 76 kts and a top speed of 86 kts.

This MSFS aircraft is a faithful recreation of 'D-EJOL', a meticulously restored Kl 25 d VII R, which is operated in EDTE Euthingen im Gäu in Germany, in its current state of equipment. The'EJOL' is the third oldest airworthy aircraft in Germany. Some modifications have been made over the decades. For example, the tail skid was replaced by a tail wheel. A radio and a transponder were retrofitted underneath the instrument panel. As the 6 volt alternator cannot provide sufficient power, these are supplied by a battery in the luggage compartment. An elevator trim was retrofitted and is operated via a lever on the left cockpit wall. The instrumentation in the cockpit was largely adapted to the original equipment. Where original instruments could not be found, comparable models from the 1930s were installed.

All these features are modeled on the original down to the smallest detail, including the quirks in operation such as the hand pump, with which fuel has to be pumped from the wing tanks into the main tank from time to time, or the pneumatic fuel gauge, which is operated by means of an air pump. For the first time in Flight Simulator, the sound environment of an open cockpit has been realistically implemented. This includes engine sounds and propwash, the intensity of which increases significantly as you stick your head out from behind the windshield. All engine and operating sounds were recorded from the real Klemm L25 'D-EJOL' and processed for Flight Simulator with Audiokinetic Wwise.

The aerodynamics of the Klemm L25 were authentically reproduced with the MSFS 'Modern Flight Model'. The flight behaviour of the L25 is often described as good-natured. On a calm and windless late summer afternoon, this is certainly true. The stability around the pitch and roll axes is poor, so that even in mild turbulences the aircraft needs to be flown actively. Although the aerodynamically clean airframe has a low inertia, it also has low drag compared to other aircraft of the time. The aircraft therefore glides relatively well. Hence, landings should be planned and initiated in good time. The L25 has no tendency or ability to spin. Turns must be flown with ample rudder and little aileron. Take-offs and landings in crosswinds should be avoided.

The Classics Hangar Klemm L25 sports 5 historic paint schemes and two liveries with dynamic registration numbers. For your first flights, we recommend that you use the interactive checklist included with the aircraft. A user manual is included in the package.

The Kl 25 d VII R is a single-engine, 2-seat, light multipurpose monoplane developed by German aircraft manufacturer Klemm Leichtflugzeugbau (Light Aircraft Builder). It took its maiden flight in 1928 and roughly 720 were manufactured during a production run that spanned from 1928 to 1941. The airplane proved highly successful as a trainer, sport aircraft, and for touring.

Aviation pioneer Dr. Hanns Klemm developed the Kl 25 in the mid-1920s. Klemm had worked as an engineer for Luftschiffbau Zeppelin (Zeppelin Aircraft Company) and for Daimler Aircraft Company before establishing Klemm Leichtflugzeugbau. He envisioned a lightweight, high-performance aircraft that would optimize aerodynamic efficiency, be forgiving in the air, and prove easy to manufacture and maintain.

Klemm released the Kl 25 in the heart of the Golden Age of Flight, the period of the 1920s and 1930s characterized by tremendous advancements in aircraft design. His innovative KL 25 immediately established itself as a classic, achieving all his design goals. Its elegant design, featuring a distinctive low-mounted main wing, proved highly aerodynamically efficient compared to biplanes of the era. Its fuselage, constructed of a wood frame with plywood paneling, was easy to assemble and durable. It could be powered by several different types of engines, including inline and radial powerplants.

The Kl 25 was produced in Germany and under license in the United Kingdom and in the United States. More than 30 variants were developed, each based primarily on engine type used.

The Kl 25 d VII R features an open tandem cockpit, a traditional empennage, and a fixed standard undercarriage. It measures 23 feet, 11 inches in length, stands 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 42 feet, 8 inches. It is powered by a 79-horsepower Hirth HM 60R 4-cylinder, inline piston aircraft engine mated to a 2-blade, fixed-pitch propeller. It has a maximum range of approximately 400 miles, a service ceiling of 21,300 feet above sea level, and a maximum rate of climb of 400 feet per minute. It has a stall speed of approximately 28 miles per hour and a top speed of 87 mph.
