The A-10C Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, low-wing, twin-engine military aircraft. Named after the venerable P-47 Thunderbolt of the Second World War, the jet performs a range of air-to-surface attack missions that includes close air support (CAS), strike coordination and reconnaissance (SCAR), and combat search and rescue (CSAR), among a host of others.

Popularly known as the “Warthog” or the “Hog,” and affectionately dubbed the “Hawg” by its pilots and ground crew, the A-10C is flown by the United States Air Force and Air National Guard. An upgraded version of the original Thunderbolt II, which first flew on May 10, 1972, the A-10C boasts advanced avionics, communications, and targeting systems.

Combat proven in Afghanistan and Iraq, the aircraft can operate out of unimproved, austere airfields and is extremely survivable, with titanium armor around key areas of the airframe and redundancy of critical systems. The A-10 was engineered around a powerful 30mm high-speed rotary cannon, and has eleven hardpoints to carry bombs, rockets, missiles, and external fuel tanks and other equipment.

The A-10C features a glass cockpit with three color multi-function displays, an unswept main wing with a span of 57 feet, 6 inches, an empennage with twin vertical stabilizers, and retractable tricycle landing gear. It is powered by two turbofan engines that produce up to 9,000 pounds of thrust each and are mounted high on the rear aspect of the aircraft’s fuselage. The Thunderbolt II has a range of 800 miles, a top speed of 420 miles per hour, and a service ceiling of 45,000 feet.
