The MiG-29 is a single-seat, twin-engine, supersonic fighter aircraft created by aerospace firm Mikoyan of the Soviet Union. The powerful MiG-29 first flew on October 6, 1977 and was introduced into service in July of 1982. Designed as an air superiority jet to answer the threat posed by American-produced F-15 Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falcons, the MiG-29 has proven to be an effective multi-role platform capable of both air-to-air and air-to-surface missions. The jet, which has the NATO reporting name “Fulcrum,” has served a number of countries in the decades since its debut, including Poland, Ukraine, and Malaysia.

The MiG-29 features a swept main wing with a span of 37 feet, 3 inches, an empennage composed of horizontal flying tailplanes and twin vertical stabilizers, and a retractable tricycle undercarriage. The aircraft is powered by two Klimov RD-33 afterburning turbofan engines that each produce up to 11,110 pounds of thrust in military power and 18,340 pounds under full afterburner.

The MiG-29 is renowned for its performance. It has a top speed of 1,500 miles per hour (Mach 2.25), a range of 1,300 miles, and a ceiling of 60,000 feet above sea level. It can pull up to 9gs, and with a thrust-to-weight ratio of 1.09, it can blast into the heights at an incredible 65,000 vertical feet per minute.

Bold and muscular, the Mikoyan MiG-29 is a legendary beast of the heights. Born of Cold War necessity, the jet is a dream machine for aviators looking to push themselves, and their aircraft, to the very limits.
