The A-6 Intruder is a two-seat, twin-engine, military attack bomber developed and manufactured by American aerospace company Grumman. The aircraft took its maiden flight on April 19, 1960 and it was introduced in 1963 with the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. The Intruder served the Marine Corps until 1993 and the Navy until 1997.

The initiative that led to the development of the A-6 intruder was based on the U.S. Navy’s experiences with aircraft operations during the Korean War. Aircraft were typically incapable of conducting close air support and other air-to-ground missions during the night and adverse weather conditions. The Navy issued a request in 1957 stating that they required a carrier-capable aircraft that could conduct attack bombing operations at any time, regardless of darkness or weather. The Marine Corps required that the aircraft be able to operate out of short airfields, and thus needed short take-off and landing (STOL) qualities.

Engineers at Grumman developed an aircraft that could carry a large load of bombs, fly in all weather and lighting conditions, and comprised advanced targeting and navigational computers. The first prototypes took their maiden flights in the spring and summer of 1960. Production versions satisfied all requirements for both the Navy and the Marine Corps. Grumman delivered the first A-6 Intruders in February of 1963.

The A-6, when operational, could carry both conventional and nuclear air-to-ground munitions. It was carrier-capable and could also operate out of short terrestrial runways due to its STOL performance. Its advanced situational awareness systems allowed it to deliver ordnance in zero-visibility conditions. Grumman produced several upgrades, including modifications allowing it to engage moving surface targets and to provide air-to-air refueling. The base airframe was used to create the EA-6B Prowler, an electronic warfare aircraft that was introduced in 1971 and served until 2019.

The A-6 Intruder has a cockpit with side-by-side seating to accommodate one pilot and one bombardier-navigator (BN). It features a mid-mounted swept main wing, a traditional empennage with an all-moving tailplane (stabilator), and retractable tricycle landing gear. It has five external store stations that, when the aircraft was operational, could carry up to a total of 18,000 pounds of ordnance.

The A-6 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney J52 turbojet engines that each produce up to 9,300 pounds of thrust. The Intruder measures 54 feet, 9 inches in length, stands 16 feet, 2 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 53 feet. The aircraft has a maximum range of 2,740 miles, a service ceiling of 42,400 feet above sea level, a cruising speed of 474 miles per hour, and a top speed of 640 mph.
