4.5/5 (13)

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 was a Soviet fighter aircraft developed in the late 1930s, known for its sleek design and high-altitude performance. It featured a streamlined fuselage and retractable landing gear, which were innovative for its time. Powered by the Klimov M-105P V12 engine, the MiG-3 could reach speeds of approximately 640 km/h (400 mph). First flying in 1940, it served primarily during World War II as an interceptor. Although effective against German bombers, it struggled in low-altitude combat and was eventually outclassed by more versatile aircraft. Despite its limitations, the MiG-3 played a key role in the early war years and contributed to Soviet aviation advancements.

The MiG-3 is a single-seat, single-engine combat aircraft developed and manufactured by Mikoyan-Gurevich of the Soviet Union. The MiG-3 took its maiden flight on October 29, 1940 and it entered service in 1941 with the Soviet military. Mikoyan-Gurevich manufactured more than 3,200 during a production run that spanned from 1940 to 1941. The Soviets retired the aircraft in 1945 at the end of World War II and only a few remain in existence today.

The MiG-3 was developed to satisfy the need for a high-altitude interception and air superiority aircraft. Engineers sough to meet several design criteria with the aircraft, including a range of at least 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), a service ceiling of at least 12,000 meters (39,370 feet) above sea level, and a top sustained speed of at least 600 kilometers per hour (373 miles per hour). Mikoyan-Gurevich based the MiG-3 design on their MiG-1, a high-altitude interceptor that took its maiden flight on April 5, 1940.

The MiG-3 design comprises several improvements over the MiG-1, including added ammunition capability, strengthened landing gear, and optimized engine performance. Although challenging to operate for the newly initiated, seasoned MiG-3 pilots championed its ability to perform at high-altitudes as well as close to the ground.

The MiG-3 features a low-mounted main wing, a standard empennage, and a retractable standard undercarriage. The aircraft measures 27 feet, 1 inch in length, stands 10 feet, 10 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 33 feet, 6 inches. It is powered by a single Mikulin AM-35A supercharged V-12 piston engine that turns a 3-blade propeller. During its military operational tenure, it was armed with a single 12.7mm machine gun and two 7.72mm machine guns, and it could carry up to six rockets or two bombs.

The MiG-3 has a range of up to 510 miles, a service ceiling of 39,370 feet above sea level, a climb rate of 2,560 feet per minute, and a maximum speed of 398 miles per hour.
