The F-5E Tiger II is a twin-engine, single-seat, multi-role military combat aircraft developed and produced by American aerospace firm Northrop. The Tiger II is an evolutionary development of the F-5, the prototype of which took its maiden flight on July 30, 1959. The F-5E Tiger II first took to the sky on August 11, 1972 and it entered service shortly thereafter. The aircraft has served the militaries of several countries in addition to the United States, including Brazil, Chile, Singapore, Malaysia, and Switzerland, among others. Northrop manufactured 1,400 F-5E Tiger II airframes during a production run that spanned from 1972 to 1987.

Northrop initiated the F-5 program to create a supersonic, lightweight, multi-mission, combat aircraft that was efficient to operate and maintain. The Tiger II was based on over a decade of operational experience of the initial jets of the F-5 family. Improvements of the F-5E include more powerful engines, upgraded avionics and flight controls, and an improved air-to-air radar system. Engineers also added enhanced aerodynamic features to the Tiger II, notably main wing leading edge root extensions for optimized maneuverability at low airspeeds and high-angle-of-attack maneuvers. The Tiger II is armed with two 20mm cannons internally housed in its nose and it has seven hardpoints that allow it to carry a full spectrum of stores, including external fuel tanks, targeting pods, missiles, rocket pods, and bombs.

The F-5E Tiger II has proven to be one of the most successful military aircraft ever produced. It can perform a wide spectrum of missions, including air superiority, interdiction, strike, close air support, surface attack, light bombing, and ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) data collections. The Tiger II has also performed a highly specialized training role for the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps, opposition force, or OPFOR. During tactical military aircraft training, OPFOR aircraft act as “red” enemy platforms that engage “blue” friendly aircraft as aggressors.

The F-5E Tiger II provides a phenomenal flying experience. The cockpit is arranged for maximum pilot efficacy and the aircraft’s refined aerodynamics make it an exceptional performer throughout a range of flight profiles, from slow speed to supersonic.

The F-5E measures 48 feet, 2 inches in length, has a wingspan of 27 feet, 12 inches, and it stands 13 feet, 5 inches tall. It is powered by two afterburning turbojet engines that each produce up to 3,500 pounds of thrust in military power and a maximum 5,000 pounds of thrust with afterburner.

The Tiger II has a maximum range of 2,310 miles, a service ceiling of 51,800 feet above sea level, a cruise speed of 530 miles per hour, and a maximum speed of 1,080 mph.
