The Wedell-Williams Model 44 is a racing aircraft, where four models were built in the United States in the early 1930s by the Wedell-Williams Air Service Corporation.
It all started with a partnership between experienced pilot Jimmy Wedell and millionaire Harry P. Williams after giving him flying lessons in 1929.
Initial plans were to learn to fly, provide an aerial photography service, and win an airmail contract. Wedell's passion for air racing led him to convince Williams to build an aircraft for the January 1930 Air Races in Miami.
After attempts with other aircraft such as "We-Will", "We-Winc" and "We-Will Jr", Wedell returned to the "We-Will" model where he had already achieved an acceptable level of performance and renamed it "Model 44". Fitted with a Pratt & Whitney Wasp Jr. engine, the project's true potential began to be realized. That year, the "44" took second place in the National Air Races.
The Model 44s became dominant from the 1930s, where it set records, including a new world speed record in the year 1933.
There is currently a single Model 44, and it is on display at the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, Cleveland, Ohio.
Three Model 44 replicas are on display at the Louisiana State Museum, Patterson, Louisiana.
