NIEUPORT 24NIEUPORTBIPLANE

4.6/5 (71)

The Nieuport 24 had the misfortune to be the penultimate design suited to tactics that were being superseded when it entered service. Its small size, relatively light weight and small engine gave it a significant manoeuverability advantage in a dog fight. However, larger and heavier fighters that relied almost entirely on speed such as the SPAD VII and Albatros D.III were entering service along with the introduction of ever larger combat formations, which generally negated its manoeuverability. While its handling was improved slightly, its performance was little better than the previous Nieuport 23 it was meant to replace, and so it was operated alongside larger numbers of the SPAD S.VII, although in November 1917, out of a French frontline fighter strength of 754 aircraft, Nieuports still made up 310 aircraft. Operational Nieuport 24’s served with French, British and Russian units, and the type also served widely as an advanced trainer.

The 24 is a single-seat, single-engine, military biplane produced by French aircraft manufacturer Nieuport. The airplane is a member of the renowned World War I lineage of fighters that began with the Nieuport 11 in 1916. The 24 was developed from an iteration of the 17 and it was introduced in the spring of 1917.

Armed with a single machine gun, either a pilot-level synchronized .303 caliber Vickers or a high wing-mounted .303 caliber Lewis, the Nieuport served the primary role of air-to-air fighter. It was produced in a number of variants and used in World War I by France, Great Britain, Russia, Belgium, and Italy. The 24 was used after the war by a variety of countries, including Japan and Afghanistan. The 24 was developed into the Nieuport 27, the final member of the line of fighters.

The 24 features wood framing covered in doped linen fabric, an open cockpit, and a standard undercarriage. It measures 19 feet, 3 inches in length and stands 7 feet, 10 inches tall. Technically a sesquiplane – a biplane with the upper wing longer than the lower wing – the 24’s upper wing has a span of 26 feet, 11 inches and its lower has a span of 25 feet, 8 inches. It is powered by a Le Rhone rotary engine that produces up to 130 horsepower and turns a 2-blade, fixed-pitch wood propeller. The Nieuport 24 has an endurance of 2 hours, 15 minutes, a service ceiling of 22,600 feet above sea level, and a top speed of 109 miles per hour.
