SEAFIREFLIGHT REPLICASROYAL NAVYFIGHTERAIRCRAFT CARRIER

4.2/5 (24)

The Supermarine Seafire is a naval version of the Supermarine Spitfire adapted for operation from aircraft carriers. The Seafire Mk.III was first operationally-viable Seafire variant, helped by having folding wings. This led to the type rapidly spreading throughout the Fleet Air Arm (Royal Navy).

In November 1942, the first combat use of the Seafire occurred during Operation Torch, the Allied landings in North Africa. In July 1943, the Seafire was used to provide air cover for the Allied invasion of Sicily; and reprised this role in September 1943 during the subsequent Allied invasion of Italy. During 1944, the type was again used in quantity to provide aerial support to Allied ground forces during the Normandy landings and Operation Dragoon in Southern France. During the latter half of 1944, the Seafire became a part of the aerial component of the British Pacific Fleet, where it quickly proved to be a capable interceptor against the feared kamikaze attacks by Japanese pilots which had become increasingly common during the final years of the Pacific War.

The Seafire continued to be used for some time after the end of the war, with the Mk.III replaced replaced by Griffon-engined variants. The type saw further active combat use during the Korean War, in which Seafires performed hundreds of missions in the ground attack and combat air patrol roles during 1950. The Seafire was finally withdrawn from service during the 1950s.

The Seafire Mk.III is a single-seat, single-engine, carrier-capable, multi-role combat aircraft produced by Supermarine of the United Kingdom. The Seafire is the navalized version of the renowned World War II British fighter, the Spitfire. The name is a portmanteau of Sea Spitfire. The Seafire took its maiden flight on January 7, 1942 and it was operated throughout the Second World War and was further used in the Korean War.

There were a number of variants of the Seafire, notably the Mk.III. Used by the Royal Navy, the Mk.III featured strengthened landing gear, a tailhook for arrested landings aboard aircraft carriers, and manually folding wings for stowage. Roughly 1,200 were manufactured and they contributed significantly to the Allied victory in Europe. Many of the Mk.III Seafires were subsequently used in the Pacific theater against Japan.

The Seafire Mk.III measures 30 feet, 3 inches in length, stands 11 feet, 6 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 36 feet, 10 inches. The aircraft is powered by a single Rolls-Royce Merlin 55M V-12 engine that delivers up to 1,585 horsepower and drives a 4-blade, constant-speed propeller.

The Seafire Mk.III has a range of 465 miles, a service ceiling of 36,000 feet above sea level, and climbs at 3,250 feet per minute. It cruises at 272 miles per hour and has a top speed of 359 mph.
