The 717-200 is a twin-engine, narrow-body, regional airliner manufactured by American aerospace company Boeing. It is piloted by two and can accommodate a maximum of 134 passengers, although it typically carries between 106 and 117 in standard configurations. The 717-200 took its maiden flight on September 2, 1998 and it entered service on October 12, 1999. Boeing manufactured a total of 156 of the airframe during a production run that spanned from 1998 to 2006.

The 717 program traces its roots to the MD-80, a single-aisle airliner manufactured by American aviation firm McDonnell Douglas. The MD-80 took its maiden flight in 1979 and entered service the next year. McDonnell Douglas developed a shortened variant of the MD-80, the MD-95, in the early 1990s. Boeing renamed the MD-95 program the 717 when it acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1997. The 717-200, the production variant of the 717, is a highly successful airframe that has operated for decades throughout the world. It has built a reputation as a reliable and safe regional airliner. It features an advanced glass cockpit and fly-by-wire controls.

The Boeing 717-200 measures 124 feet in length, stands 29 feet, 89 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 93 feet, 4 inches. It is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR715 turbofan engines. It has a range of up to 2,371 miles, a service ceiling of 37,000 feet above sea level, and it cruises at 511 miles per hour.
