The MiG-21 Bis (NATO reporting name: Fishbed) is a supersonic front-line jet fighter and interceptor aircraft, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the Soviet Union.

Development of what would become the MiG-21 began in the early 1950s from several prototypes (Ye-1 to Ye-4). First delta wings prototype (Ye-4) made its maiden flight on June 16, 1955 and its first public appearance during the Soviet Aviation Day display at Moscow's Tushino airfield in July 1956.

The MiG-21 was the first successful Soviet aircraft combining fighter and interceptor characteristics in a single aircraft. It was a lightweight fighter, achieving Mach 2 with a relatively low-powered afterburning turbojet.

The delta wing, while excellent for a fast-climbing interceptor, meant any form of turning combat led to a rapid loss of speed. However, the light loading of the aircraft could mean that a climb rate of 235 m/s (46,250 ft/min) was possible with a combat-loaded MiG-21bis not far short of the performance of the later F-16A.

Due to its simplicity of design, ease of mastering the piloting technique and excellent indicators of speed and maneuverability, the Mig 21 is widely used in the world.

The MiG-21bis, NATO designation name “Fishbed,” is a single-seat, single-engine, supersonic military jet aircraft by Soviet aviation bureau Mikoyan-Gurevich. The aircraft, designed and operated as both an offensive fighter and a defensive interceptor, took its first flight on June 16, 1955 and was introduced in 1969. With more than 10,000 produced and having served over 60 governments, the airframe is one of the most successful in the history of military aviation.

The MiG-21bis features a delta wing, an empennage composed of swept-back horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and a high-output engine. This arrangement allows the jet to fly as fast as twice the speed of sound and also to be highly maneuverable.

The MiG-21bis is powered by a single Tumansky R-25-300 afterburning turbojet engine that produces up to 15,640 pounds of thrust. The jet, which has a length of 48 feet, 3 inches and a wing span of 23 feet, 6 inches, boasts a top speed of Mach 2.05. The jet has a range of 410 miles, can climb at 6,500 feet per minute, and has a service ceiling of 57,400 feet.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21bis is a breed of aircraft that allows aviators to fly screaming fast and also to perform intricate maneuvers. Inside the cockpit, pilots can rocket from point to point or launch into a medley of intricate aerobatics, pushing the limits of their skills as well as the capabilities of this storied aircraft.
