Got Friends

ASTROONEEVTOLVTOLDRONE

4.6/5 (204)

Inspired by an evolving industry of electric vertical take-off and landing (EVTOL) craft, the Astro One is Got Friends’ first experimental take on this side of aviation. The project is heavily inspired by the real world “Jetson One” design which is still in ongoing development, and is set to be one of the world's first personal EVTOLs that don't require a pilot's license. As of April 2023, multiple real-world tests have been conducted with the Jetson One, with the first set of units expected to be delivered by the end of this year.

The Astro One is Got Friends creative take on what a near-future could hold for EVTOL technology. The project features a fully experimental flight model coded by our flight dynamics programmer Got Gravel. The flight model is a fully independent venture and is separate from Asobo’s simulation. The flight dynamics are not following the standard fixed-wing or helicopter flight modeling within Microsoft Flight Simulator and instead running a locally contained physics engine with mathematical accuracy. This paves the way for our team to further develop this technology for more creative use in the future, bringing more varieties of aircraft never before seen in the simulator.

In regards to the Astro One, our model takes many creative liberties compared to its real world counterpart with the intent to craft a completely different flight simulation experience to those created in the sim thus far. This includes, but is not limited to, a fully custom digital avionics display, safety lighting, propeller guards, RGB inlaid paint schemes, terrain tracking, dynamic boosting, and sport mode. This project was also developed in partnership with Emerald Scenery Design, who created Astro Corsa; an included scenery race track for the community to test out their Astro One.

The Astro One is a single-seat, 8-motor, personal electric multirotor EVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft.

The aircraft is configured with four points of thrust, with each point consisting of a pusher and tractor motor-propeller unit in a contrarotating, coaxial configuration. This enhances the vehicle’s thrust and provides redundancy in the case of a motor failure. The frame of the Astro One is carbon fiber and aluminum construction, and it features an open design with a cockpit that resembles a roll cage on a high-speed car.

The aircraft is powered by a high-performance lithium-ion battery that drives high-output brushless outrunner motors, each turning 2-blade carbon fiber propellers. Its flight control system is redundant, it has a hands-free mode, and it has an auto landing feature with a lidar sensor for precision automated control. For added safety, the Astro One includes a ballistic parachute system. The aircraft uses a 3-axis joystick, throttle lever, and yaw pedals for control inputs.

The Astro One has an endurance of 20 minutes, a ceiling of 1,500 feet above ground level, and a top speed of 63 miles per hour.
