WW2BOMBERHISTORICALLUFTWAFFEPISTON

4.1/5 (35)

Meet one of the worlds most recognizable warplanes!

Through development, He 111 was described as a "wolf in sheep's clothing". Due to restrictions placed on Germany after the First World War prohibiting bombers, it was presented solely as a civil airliner, although from conception the design was intended to provide the nascent Luftwaffe with a heavy bomber... 6,508 built.

The He 111 is a twin-engine, multi-role aircraft developed and manufactured by German aviation producer Heinkel that was used as an airliner and as a bomber. It took its maiden flight on February 24, 1935, and the first passenger variant entered service with Deutsche Luft Hansa in 1936. The first functional military versions entered service in early 1937. A small number of He 111s are on static display in museums, none of which are airworthy.

The He 111 proved an exceptional design, both for passenger transport and for bombing operations due to its speed, efficiency, and reliability. Heinkel manufactured more than 6,500 units between 1935 and 1944. Including prototypes, the He 111 was produced in nearly 80 distinct variants, including the He 111 H-16 version. The He 111 H-16, introduced in late 1942, was the third wave of the H variant, the principal lineage of the He 111 used for military operations. Heinkel built 1,155 H-16s and converted 315 from earlier H models to H-16 specifications. It was armed with seven machine guns and a single 20mm cannon. It could carry up to 4,400 pounds of bombs internally or 7,900 pounds externally (mounted under the wing and fuselage). No He 111 H-16 remains in existence.

The He 111 H-16 was piloted by two and had an additional operational crew of three. It featured a low-mounted, cantilever main wing, a retractable standard undercarriage, and a standard tail unit. It had a distinctive fuselage with a high visibility “greenhouse” nose. It measured 53 feet, 10 inches in length, stood 13 feet, 1 inch tall, and had a wingspan of 74 feet, 2 inches. It was powered by two Junkers Jumo 211 F-2 piston engines, each of which could generate up to 1,322 horsepower. Each engine turned a 3-bladed, variable-pitch propeller.

The He 111 H-16 had a range of 1,400 miles, a service ceiling of 21,300 feet above sea level, and a maximum speed of 270 miles per hour.
