The S.E.5a is a single-engine, single-seat, World War I-era military biplane developed by the Royal Aircraft Factory of Great Britain. The prototype of the fighter took its maiden flight on November 22, 1916 and the series entered service in March of 1917 during the height of the First World War. Manufacturers produced more than 5,000 units of the airframe type and it proved critically important for the Allied victory. Its speed, stability, and maneuverability earned it a reputation as one of the greatest fighters of World War I. It performed air-to-air engagements (dogfighting), light bombing, and ground attack missions. A small number of original, non-flying examples are housed in museums throughout the world.

The S.E.5 (Scout Experimental 5) evolved through the work of engineers at the Royal Aircraft Factory seeking to create an air superiority fighter with better performance than the best German aircraft at the time. After several rounds of prototypes, the Royal Aircraft Factory introduced the S.E.5, which would become a legend. The aircraft could fly fast, climb high, dive quickly, and perform tight maneuvers necessary for air-to-air engagements. The S.E.5a, an improved variant of the S.E.5 with a more powerful engine, was introduced shortly after the S.E.5. The combat performance of the S.E.5a helped the Allies win World War I.

The S.E.5a features an open cockpit design, a standard empennage, and a fixed standard undercarriage. It measures 20 feet, 11 inches in length, stands 9 feet, 6 inches tall and has a wingspan of 26 feet, 7 inches. It is powered by a 200-horsepower, V-8 piston engine that turns a fixed-pitch propeller. The aircraft had a maximum range of 300 miles, a service ceiling of 17,000 feet above sea level, and a top speed of 138 miles per hour.
