PIPERPA38TOMAHAWKTRAINERPISTON

4.4/5 (113)

Following on from their popular PA-28R Arrow III, PA-28R Turbo Arrow III/IV, and PA-28-161 Warrior II, Just Flight’s in-house team has developed this highly detailed simulation of the Piper PA-38-112 Tomahawk following comprehensive, hands-on research with a real-life Tomahawk, G-BNKH. The Piper PA-38-112 Tomahawk is a two-seater, piston-engine aircraft equipped with a fixed tricycle landing gear, 112hp four-cylinder engine and fixed-pitch propeller – an ideal aircraft for touring and flight training!

Model

  • Accurately modelled Piper PA-38-112, built using real-world aircraft plans and comprehensive photography of the real aircraft
  • Numerous animations including cockpit doors, cockpit windows, fuel caps, and fuel drains
  • Ground equipment including chocks, tie-downs, pushback towbar and pitot covers
  • 8K resolution PBR textures are used to produce the highest possible texture clarity, with 13 different liveries
  • High quality dirt textures including water stains stemming from rivets and panel gaps, and even dirt and rubber under the wings that has been flicked up off the tyres
  • Interactive exterior model allow you to perform a full pre-flight walkaround, including checking tyre pressures, checking the water level in the fuel, and even spinning the propeller

Cockpit

  • A truly 3D cockpit environment right down to accurately modelled seat belts and screw heads - every instrument is constructed fully in 3D with smooth animations
  • Cockpit textures feature wear and tear based on reference photos taken in the real aircraft to produce an authentic environment
  • Just Flight’s EFB including aircraft configuration options, walkaround simulation, failures, and SimBrief OFP and Navigraph charts support
  • Automatic aircraft configuration options to get you airborne in seconds, plus persistent user state saving
  • Fully functional and comprehensive IFR capable avionics fit including: GMA 340 audio selector, SL30 COM1/NAV1 radio, SL40 COM2 radio, GTX 328 transponder, and GNS 430/530. Also supports PMS-50 GTN 750 and TDS GTNXi (both sold separately)
  • Developed using the latest MSFS standards, including intuitive and easy-to-use controls for rotary knobs, multi-position switches and levers, and VR support

Custom-coded aircraft systems

  • Fuel system including the option to have automatic switching of the fuel tanks for use on those long distance cross-country flights
  • Electrical system with fully simulated circuit breakers
  • Functioning carburettor heat and primer
  • A fully interactable walkaround mode, allowing you to perform a full pre-flight walkaround of the exterior
  • Wear and tear that effects over 15 components that is both persistent across flights and varies depending on how you treat your aircraft. Your tyres will wear faster if you often make firm landings or operate from soft fields and the grip of your tyres will decrease over time
  • Failures including spark plug fowling, limited battery life and vapor lock
  • Lighting system includes separate lighting control for interior and exterior lighting, including dimmer switches for instruments panel and radio stack lighting
  • Many other details, such as cockpit doors that automatically close with airflow and vibrating engine exhausts
  • Support for MSFS interactive checklist system

Sounds

  • Native (Wwise) sound package taking full advantage of MSFS’s capabilities
  • Studio quality Lycoming O-235 engine sounds, recorded from the real aircraft
  • A plethora of cockpit sound effects, recorded from the real aircraft
  • Accurately positioned 3D sound sources (best enjoyed in VR!)
  • Custom crash and scraping effects

FDE and effects

  • Realistic and accurate flight dynamics based on real-world performance and handling data and input from real Tomahawk pilots
  • Simulated Tomahawk’s renowned stall and spin characteristics
  • Custom effects including exhaust haze, windshield water effects, and wheel spray

The PA-38-112 Tomahawk II is a two-seat, single-engine, low-wing monoplane by American aircraft manufacturer Piper. The company developed the airframe in the 1970s specifically with training in mind. They designed it with a side-by-side cockpit so flight instructors could always maintain the highest level of situational awareness on both aircraft and students. They also carefully engineered the wing, tail section, and the control surfaces to allow instructors to easily place the aircraft into a variety of aerodynamic situations from which students could quickly and safely recover, notably spins.

Piper introduced the Tomahawk in 1978 and then the Tomahawk II in 1981. The Tomahawk II has a number of improvements over its progenitor, including enhanced elevator trim and larger tires for higher ground clearance for operations out of gravel, grass and unimproved airfields.

The Tomahawk II measures 23 feet, 2 inches in length and has a 34-foot wingspan. It features a T-tail empennage and a fixed tricycle undercarriage. It is powered by an Avco Lycoming O-235-L2C four-cylinder piston engine that delivers up to 112 horsepower to a 2-blade, fixed-pitch propeller.

The aircraft has a range of 539 miles, climbs at 718 feet per minute, and has a service ceiling of 13,000 feet above sea level. It cruises at 115 miles per hour, stalls at 57 mph, and has a maximum speed of 126. The aircraft has excellent short field performance, although it is not a STOL (short take-off and landing) aircraft. It requires 1,460 feet of ground roll for a take-off run and 1,544 for landing.
