5/5 (20)

Welcome to another Aircraft Adventure by Lionheart Creations. This is the Wittman Tailwind W-10 'Bush Edition' Homebuilt aircraft. This aircraft package is a customized 'advanced' design that converts the Wittman Tailwind W-10 into a full STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft. The aircraft features a taller, stronger landing gear, a six foot wider wingspan, special wings with 26 gallon fuel tanks per wing, bigger tail structures, modified 'larger' flaps as like performance STOL aircraft have, a very large 6 cylinder IO-540 engine, a higher cruise speed, slower take-off and landing STOL performance, and all wrapped up into a small two seater Experimental Wittman Tailwind. The propeller that this aircraft builder used is massive, requiring a much taller landing gear to enable safe prop clearance from the ground, both in tail down and tail up angles.

The looks of the Tailwind are radical. They are small, tight fitting, sporty looking aircraft with a cowling shaped like a wedge, its perspex windscreen curving up from the cowling like a wing foil shape, making the entire top of the fuselage a 'lift' inducing wing surface. The wings are like a Bellanca. Fully wood construction, from spar and ribbing, to the skins, they have no rivets, no seams, are sanded and finished with a glass finish, making them ultra slippery with windflow.

This aircraft design actually exists and was designed and built by Craig Thomas of Montanna. Craig put much work into the calculations and requirements that such a plane would require to live a life of a STOL aircraft. When he was done, I think we can say, he achieved his goals.

This package comes with 16 Liveries, all in 4K resolution. These feature high detail interiors, unique racing seats, an Asobo state of the art soundpack of the IO-540 6 cylinder engine. I also wanted to make these 'Adventure' planes. Part of the 'Theme' of this package was to make a set of 'Adventure' aircraft where you could go on a dream journey, like to Oshkosh, for instance. And so I thought... They will need 'Tents' and little folding chairs. So I have included a 'Camping Mode' where you click a button and a small ensemble deploys, consisting of two little camping tents, two fold up, ultra-lite chairs, a cooler for food, and your flight bag. There is even a little campfire that glows red at night and lanterns hanging on the wings on the tie-down loops. Flip those on at night for camping lighting.

The one thing with the Tailwind STOL Bush Edition I found to be the most fun, is doing those gyrocopter like approaches at slow speed with full flaps, coming down to land. Great fun. I found myself doing hops from flat zones to flat zones in terrain and countrysides, practicing soft field landings and landings in the desert. With full fuel and passengers, she will stall out at 45 knots, full flaps. But.... If you have her half laden of fuel (half tanks) or even 1/4 tanks, and also leave your passenger off the plane (set to one passenger onboard), your plane will hover 'very well' and you can get the best performance STOL play time ever! It will be like a gyrocopter, lol.

Then, let us remember, this bird has a IO-540, so you also have a powerful fan for take-offs on short strips, as well as a fast cruise, able to push it at max throttle to 200 MPH or 170 knots. Mind you, she will start to rattle and vibrate at that speed, but it's possible.

There is a neat manual with lots of screenshots, information, and diagrams for you to glance over. It is in the Manual folder of your aircraft folder, and also downloadable from here; https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d_qYIdMq13eyhBvSRzhZcMAlKJxaQPUJ/view?usp=sharing

I hope you enjoy this unique, radical homebuilt. It was made with much love and enthusiasm. Thanks to Craig for allowing me permission to recreate his beauty for Microsoft Flight Simulator FS2020. 1

The W-10 Tailwind Bush Edition is a 2-seat, single-engine, home-built STOL (short take-off and landing) light aircraft. The “Bush Edition” is a variant of the original W-10 Tailwind, which was developed by American aerospace engineer Steve Wittman.

The original Tailwind design, the W-8, was introduced in 1953 and several Tailwind variants emerged in the ensuing decades, including the W-10. The Bush Edition of the W-10 features an extended wingspan, taller main landing gear legs, larger tail unit surfaces, larger wing flaps, larger fuel tanks, and a more robust engine.

The W-10 Tailwind Bush Edition features a strut-braced, high-mounted main wing, side-by-side seating, and a fixed traditional undercarriage optimized for STOL operations from austere airstrips due to its extended, ruggedized main landing gear legs. The Bush edition retains the forgiving nature for which the W-10 Tailwind became renowned and has the added benefit of short field performance.

The W-10 Tailwind Bush Edition measures 18 feet in length, stands 5 feet, 3 inches tall, and has a 26-foot wingspan. It is powered by a 6-cylinder Lycoming IO-540 piston engine that generates up to 260 horsepower and turns a 2-blade propeller.

The W-10 Tailwind Bush Edition has a range of 690 miles, a service ceiling of 16,000 feet above sea level, and a full-flaps stall speed of 52 miles per hour. It cruises at 173 mph and has a maximum speed of 196.
