AIRCRAFTPISTONCAP-4

4.8/5 (19)

The CAP-4 Paulistinha comes with eight liveries: N505, PP-HCP, PP-HIY, PP-HLJ, PP-TJR, PT-ZGA, Xbox Aviators Club, and Aviators Club.

The CAP-4 Paulistinha is a single-engine, tandem 2-seat, high-wing monoplane developed by Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Empresa Aeronáutica Ypiranga (EAY). The aircraft took its maiden flight in 1935 and EAY produced a total of five of the airframe. Companhia Aeronáutica Paulista (CAP), also of Brazil, purchased EAY in 1942 and refined the design of the aircraft. CAP produced the aircraft until 1948, manufacturing a total of 777 units.

The history of the CAP-4 began in 1931 when EAY crafted the EAY-101, a copy of the DFS Zögling, a German high-wing sailplane. The firm then sought to produce a powered high-wing aircraft, and copied the design of the Taylor Cub, which was developed and manufactured by the Taylor Aircraft Company of the United States and which took its maiden flight in September of 1930. Called the EAY-201 Ypiranga, the tandem 2-seat airplane was powered by a French-made Salmson 9AD 40-horsepower radial engine. EAY built just five of the 201s, and in 1942 the company was purchased by Companhia Aeronáutica Paulista. CAP took the EAY-201 design and refined it, including using a more powerful engine, and renamed it the CAP-4. It enjoyed a production run of more than a decade.

The CAP-4 features a steel-tube, fabric-covered fuselage, a strut-braced main wing, a standard empennage, and a fixed traditional undercarriage. The aircraft was used by both civil and military customers. The CAP-4 was popular as a trainer and as a general-purpose light aircraft. Flown primarily in Brazil, the CAP-4 was also exported to the country’s South American neighbors of Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, as well as to Portugal.

The CAP-4 measures 21 feet, 10 inches in length, stands 6 feet, 5 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 33 feet, 2 inches. It is powered by a Franklin 4AC 4-cylinder, air-cooled, flat-four piston engine that produces up to 65 horsepower. The engine turns a fixed-pitch, 2-blade wood propeller. The aircraft has a range of 310 miles, a service ceiling of 13,000 feet above sea level, and it climbs at 610 feet per minute. It cruises at 87 miles per hour and has a top speed of 96 mph.
