The Jetson ONE is a single-seat, 8-motor, multirotor eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) personal aircraft designed by Polish inventor Tomasz Patan, co-founder of pioneering aviation technology company Jetson. The ONE proof-of-concept took its first crewed flight on February 28, 2018. The ONE has an open vehicle frame that incorporates a safety cage that provides both maximum safety and optimized situational awareness for the pilot.
The frame is composed of aerospace aluminum and advanced carbon fiber and Kevlar composite materials for maximum strength and minimum weight. The ONE is a coaxial octocopter with four points of thrust. Each thrust point consists of a pusher and a tractor motor-propeller unit arranged in a contrarotating, coaxial configuration. This enhances the vehicle’s thrust, optimizes its flight control precision, and provides redundancy in the case of a motor or a propeller failure. Each of the eight motors is a high-output, brushless outrunner design, and each turns a 2-blade, fixed-pitch carbon fiber propeller. A high-capacity lithium-ion battery pack capable of high-discharge rates powers the aircraft, including the motors and all other systems.
The ONE’s flight control system is triple redundant, has a hands-free mode, incorporates a collision avoidance system, and has an auto-land feature. The flight control system is designed for maximum safety and intuitiveness, such that even those who have never flown can quickly learn to control the aircraft from launch to landing. For added safety, the ONE includes a ballistic parachute system. The aircraft is controlled by a fly-by-wire, 3-axis joystick. The ONE has an endurance of approximately 20 minutes, a ceiling of 1,500 feet above ground level, and a top speed of 63 miles per hour.
