The R66 is a single-engine, 5-seat, turbine-powered, light utility helicopter developed and manufactured by Robinson Helicopter Company of the United States. The R66 took its maiden flight on November 7, 2007 and it entered service on November 30, 2010. The rotorcraft has proven itself to be exceptionally versatile, with uses including aerial tours, aerial photography and videography, newsgathering, law enforcement, private use, business and VIP transport, and others.

The R66 traces its lineage to the birth of the Robinson Helicopter Company in the 1970s. Established to create a small, lightweight helicopter for the general aviation market, the company introduced the R22, a two-seat, single-engine, piston-powered model in 1979. Based on the success of the R22, Robinson developed the R44, a four-seat, piston-powered helicopter introduced in 1993. The R44 proved an immediate success, setting sales records in the ensuing years with thousands produced. In 2001, based on decades of feedback and experience, Robinson began developing the company’s next release, the R66, a turbine-powered rotorcraft based on the R44. The goal of the R66 was to produce a 5-person helicopter that could perform a variety of missions and do so reliably and economically. Formal engineering began in 2005 after the company secured a commitment by Rolls-Royce to develop a 300-horsepower turboshaft engine uniquely suited for the helicopter.

The production R66 has proven a tremendous success, with the model accumulating over 1.2 million flight hours across all airframes delivered throughout the world. Pilots know it as a reliable, forgiving machine that is capable throughout a spectrum of missions.

The helicopter is crewed by one and can carry up to four passengers or up to 1,200 pounds of cargo. It has a high-visibility cockpit, skids for landing gear, and can sling load cargo using an external hook. The controls are hydraulically boosted for precision control and it has a cockpit layout streamlined for maximum pilot efficacy.

The R66 measures 29 feet, 6 inches in length, 4 feet, 10 inches in width, and is 11 feet, 5 inches tall. It features a 2-blade main rotor system with a diameter of 33 feet and a 2-blade tail rotor with a diameter of 5 feet. It is powered by a Rolls-Royce RR300 turboshaft engine that delivers up to 270 shaft horsepower for take-off and up to 224 shaft horsepower for continuous operation. The R66 has a maximum range of 403 miles and a cruise speed of 127 miles per hour. It has a service ceiling of 14,000 feet above sea level, a climb rate of 1,000 feet per minute, and a hover ceiling of over 10,000 feet above mean sea level.
