The Pipistrel Taurus comes with the following liveries: Azure, Factory.
The Taurus is a 2-seat motorized sailplane developed and manufactured by Slovenian aircraft firm Pipistrel. The company developed the Taurus as an uncompromising, high-performance soaring craft that could self-launch. The sailplane incorporates a retractable onboard thrust system consisting of a piston engine and a belt-driven propeller. The thrust system can be deployed for launch and then fully retracted into a drag-free housing. It can also be deployed mid-flight for an altitude boost or for cross-country touring. The Taurus is considered a light sport / microlight aircraft due to its light weight.
Pipistrel undertook the Taurus initiative in 2001 to create a lightweight sailplane that could take to the sky without assistance from tow aircraft or ground launch systems. It took its maiden flight in 2004 and production is ongoing. The innovative design features composite construction, a T-tail empennage, and a standard undercarriage. The two main landing gear wheels can be manually retracted, and the tail wheel is tied to the rudder for agile taxiing.
The wing of the Taurus was painstakingly designed for optimum soaring in all types of lift, including thermal lift, ridge lift, and mountain and gravity wave lift. Mounted mid-fuselage directly behind the cockpit, it is a high-aspect-ratio design with integrated winglets to counter the development of drag-inducing vortices. The wing comprises flaperons and spoilers for flight control and lift / descent augmentation. The wing has removable wingtips for ease of storage and transport. The wing gives the Taurus an impressive 41:1 glide ratio.
The roomy cockpit of the Taurus boasts side-by-side seating, a high-visibility canopy, and a center-mounted avionics station with a full suite of soaring instrumentation including variometer and flight computer. The onboard thrust system, located behind the wing, deploys by rotating out of an enclosure and is controlled with a series of switches in the cockpit. It consists of a 2-cylinder, 53-horsepower Rotax 503 engine that is mounted within a carbon fiber housing with an integrated propeller boom. The engine drives a 2-blade, fixed-pitch, wood propeller via belt drive. The system automatically centers the propeller during retraction, simplifying the overall powered flight process for the pilot. The Taurus has two onboard rechargeable batteries, one for the engine starter and one to power the avionics and other electronic equipment. The engine’s onboard generator charges both batteries when it runs, and onboard solar panels charge the avionics battery continuously in sunlight.
The Taurus measures 23 feet, 11 inches in length, stands 4 feet, 8 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 49 feet, 1 inch. The sailplane can launch with 590 feet of ground roll, and it climbs at 580 feet per minute while under power. It carries 7.1 gallons of fuel and burns 3.1 gallons per hour while cruising at a speed of 74 miles per hour, giving it a run time of 2.3 hours.
