About the Boeing 747-100 The Boeing 747-100 is the aircraft that revolutionized global air travel, introducing the world to the era of the wide-body Jumbo Jet. First flown in 1969, it set new standards for passenger capacity, range, and comfort, becoming an instant icon of aviation.

Powered by Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines, the original 747-100 featured a shorter upper deck compared to later variants, giving it a distinctive profile that defined early long-haul travel. Airlines and passengers alike marveled at its unprecedented size and luxury, while pilots appreciated its powerful yet graceful handling.

Though later models introduced improvements, the 747-100 remains a legendary pioneer, embodying the bold ambition of 1970s aviation.

Designed for discerning simmers, the Boeing 747-100 Professional brings this historic aircraft to life with unmatched realism and attention to detail, offering an immersive experience for both casual flyers and hardcore aviation fans. The 747-100 is a 4-engine, long-range, wide-body commercial jet airliner developed and manufactured by American aerospace company Boeing. The -100 is the first production variant of the storied 747 airframe, the world’s first “wide body” commercial jet airliner. The prototype of the 747 took its maiden flight on February 9, 1969, and the 747-100 entered service on January 22, 1970. Although Boeing produced several successive 747 variants, the 747-100 has remained operational for decades. Today, one remains airworthy, more than half a century after Boeing manufactured it.

The 747 concept began in the 1960s as interest in commercial air travel rapidly accelerated throughout the world. Pan American World Airways, more commonly called “Pan Am,” approached Boeing with a concept to create a high-capacity, intercontinental aircraft that would optimize operational efficiency and hence greatly boost travel economy on a per-seat basis. After 16 intensive months of development, the 747 was ready for its maiden flight in early 1969. The design comprised the distinctive 747 “hump” at the front of the fuselage with an elevated cockpit to accommodate a nose-loading cargo door. Its layout accommodated up to an incredible 550 passengers, although most configurations used far fewer seats. Engineers incorporated newly innovated high-bypass turbofan engines, which are quieter and more fuel efficient than turbojet engines, into the 747 design.

A marvel of innovation, the 747 proved to be a tremendous evolutionary leap in commercial air transport upon the introduction of the 747-100. Its wide-body design earned it the title of the world’s first “jumbo jet,” and it soon became known as the “Queen of the Skies.” Boeing manufactured a total of 168 747-100s, all of which were configured for passenger use. Boeing later converted several -100s into freighters after airline use.

The 747-100 measures 231 feet, 10 inches in length, stands 63 feet, 5 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 195 feet, 8 inches. Crewed by three, it accommodates up to 366 passengers in 3-class seating or up to 452 in 2-class seating. It is powered by four high-bypass turbofan engines, either the Pratt & Whitney JT9D, the Rolls-Royce RB211, or the General Electric CF6. It has a range of 5,320 miles, a service ceiling of 45,100 feet above sea level, and a cruise speed of 583 miles per hour.
