About the Boeing 747-200 The Boeing 747-200 is one of the most iconic and enduring variants of the original Jumbo Jet. Introduced in the early 1970s, it quickly became the backbone of long-haul aviation, offering increased range and payload compared to the pioneering 747-100.

Equipped with powerful Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, or GE engines, the -200 was a true workhorse, serving as both a passenger airliner and freighter. Its unmistakable silhouette, with a shorter upper deck compared to later models, became a symbol of global air travel during the golden age of aviation.

Pilots admired its raw power and reliability, while passengers enjoyed its spacious, elegant cabins. Though later variants introduced more advanced technology, the 747-200 remains a beloved classic, cherished by aviation enthusiasts worldwide.

Designed for discerning simmers, the Boeing 747-200 Professional brings this legendary aircraft to life with unprecedented realism and attention to detail, offering an immersive experience for both casual flyers and hardcore aviation fans.

The 747-200 is a 4-engine, long-range, wide-body commercial jet airliner developed and manufactured by American aerospace company Boeing. The -200 is the second production iteration of the storied 747 airframe, the world’s first “wide body” commercial jet airliner. The prototype of the 747 took its maiden flight on February 9, 1969, and the first production variant, the 747-100, entered service on January 22, 1970. The -100 proved to be a resounding success, and Boeing engineers followed the debut model with an improved version, the 747-200. It was fitted with more powerful engines that gave it greater range and a higher take-off weight. The 747-200 took its maiden flight on October 11, 1970 and it entered commercial service in February of 1971.

The 747 concept began in the 1960s as interest in commercial air travel rapidly accelerated throughout the world. Pan American World Airways, more commonly called “Pan Am,” approached Boeing with a concept to create a high-capacity, intercontinental aircraft that would optimize operational efficiency and hence greatly boost travel economy on a per-seat basis. After 16 intensive months of development, the 747 was ready for its maiden flight in early 1969. The design comprised the distinctive 747 “hump” at the front of the fuselage with an elevated cockpit to accommodate a nose-loading cargo door. Its layout accommodated up to an incredible 550 passengers, although most configurations used far fewer seats. Engineers incorporated newly innovated high-bypass turbofan engines, which are quieter and more fuel efficient than turbojet engines.

A marvel of innovation, the 747 proved to be a tremendous evolutionary leap in commercial air transport upon its commercial introduction. Its wide-body design earned it the title of the world’s first “jumbo jet,” and it soon became known as the “Queen of the Skies.”

The 747-200 was a tremendous success for Boeing and the airlines that it supported. Boeing manufactured a total of 393 747-200s during a production run that spanned from 1971 to 1991. Boeing developed several subvariants of the -200, including a freighter and a combi model that could carry both passengers and freight. The company also converted two 747-200B models into VC-25A aircraft for the United States Air Force. Beginning operation in 1990, VC-25s are used to transport the President of the United States and use the call sign “Air Force One” when carrying the President.

The 747-200 measures 231 feet, 10 inches in length, stands 63 feet, 5 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 195 feet, 8 inches. Crewed by three, it accommodates up to 366 passengers in 3-class seating or up to 452 in 2-class seating. It is powered by four high-bypass turbofan engines, either the Pratt & Whitney JT9D, the Rolls-Royce RB211, or the General Electric CF6. It has a range of 7,550 miles, a service ceiling of 45,100 feet above sea level, and a cruise speed of 583 miles per hour.
