The 747 Air Force One is a specially modified 747 for the transport of the United States President and those accompanying the President. Officially designated the VC-25, the 747 Air Force One is based on the 747-200B, a 4-engine, wide-body, long-range commercial jet aircraft developed and manufactured by American aerospace company Boeing. Boeing has produced a total of two VC-25 airframes for the executive branch.

While any fixed-wing aircraft that transports the President of the United States is designated Air Force One, the VC-25 is the most iconic and is always operated by the United States Air Force. (When not flying the President, the VC-25 uses a SAM, or Special Air Mission, callsign).

The airframe on which the 747 Air Force One is based, the 747-200B, is a more powerful and longer-range variant of the original 747. The prototype of the original 747 took its maiden flight on February 9, 1969 and entered commercial service on January 22, 1970. The -200 made its debut in February of 1971. The VC-25 took its maiden flight on September 6, 1990.

To create the 747 Air Force One, Boeing made extensive modifications of the original 747-200B. The aircraft has additional fuel tanks for extended range, it has in-flight refueling capability, and several onboard systems to allow for self-sufficiency at airports throughout the world.

The aircraft is a “flying Oval Office” comprising roughly 4,000 square feet of usable space. It includes a conference and dining area, several office areas, two galleys, and a private presidential quarters area. It has a self-contained baggage loader and two sets of air-stairs.

As the President of the United States is the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces, Air Force One comprises state-of-the-art command, control, and communications (C3) systems. This includes all types of encrypted radio communications and satellite communication systems. The aircraft also has advanced navigations systems and several defensive suites.

The Boeing 747 Air Force One fleet is operated by the Presidential Airlift Group, which is a component of the 89th Airlift Wing, based at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The aircraft typically flies with other supporting military aircraft.

The Boeing 747 Air Force One measures 231 feet, 10 inches in length, stands 63 feet, 5 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 196 feet, 8 inches. Able to accommodate up to 76 passengers, it has a flight crew of four: a pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer, and a navigator. Operations typically include an additional crew of 22. It is powered by four GE Aviation CF6-80C2B1 high-bypass turbofan engines, each of which can generate up to 56,700 pounds of thrust. It has a range of 7,800 miles (greatly expanded with in-flight refueling), a service ceiling of 45,100 feet above sea level, a cruising speed of 580 miles per hour, and a top speed of 630 mph.
