The A319 is a twin-engine, low-wing, narrow-body airliner produced by European aerospace firm Airbus. It is a shortened version of the A320, and the third iteration of that family of aircraft. The A319 can carry up to 156 passengers and boasts a range of up to 4,258 miles. It took to the skies for the first time on August 25, 1995 and began commercial service in April of 1996 with Swissair.

The A319 measures 111 feet long, features a fuselage-mounted tail section, and a retractable tricycle landing gear. Its main wing has a span of 117 feet, 5 inches, and is swept back 25 degrees. A digital fly-by-wire flight system, which the A320 family of aircraft pioneered, connects the two-person cockpit to the aircraft’s control surfaces. The aircraft is powered by two high-bypass turbofan engines, either the CFM International CFM56-5B or the International Aero Engines IAE V2500.

The A319 boasts a cruising speed of 514 miles per hour, a top speed of 541 mph, and has a service ceiling of 41,000 feet above sea level.

A key member of one of the dominant commercial jet lineages, the Airbus A320 family, the A319 has proven to be a reliable and versatile airframe for users throughout the world. Pilots appreciate not only the A319’s efficiency and capability, but its handling throughout its full spectrum of operation from sea level to the stratosphere.
