It took its maiden flight on April 23, 2001 and began commercial service in August of 2002.

The A340 line was developed based on technology from previous Airbus aircraft, notably the A330. The A340-600, like all iterations of the A340 lineage, features a glass cockpit, advanced avionics, and fly-by-wire controls. Several airlines continue to operate the A340-600 throughout the world, more than two decades after its debut.

The A340-600 is piloted by two and can carry a maximum of 475 passengers, but typically seats from 320 to 370. It measures 247 feet, 3 inches in length, stands 58 feet, 10 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 208 feet, 2 inches. The A340-600 is powered by four wing-mounted Rolls-Royce Trent 556 high-bypass turbofan engines that each deliver up to 61,902 pounds of thrust. The A340-600 has a range of 8,976 miles, a service ceiling of 41,450 feet above sea level, a cruising speed of 541 miles per hour, and a top speed of 568 mph.
