The E-767 is an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft produced by American aerospace and defense contractor Boeing for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The military platform is based on the Boeing 767-200 twin-engine, wide-body commercial jet airliner and comprises radar, ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) systems, communications systems, and other related systems.

AWACS aircraft use a variety of mechanisms, notably radar, to detect, identify, track, and if necessary, provide targeting information on hostile air and surface entities, including ships, aircraft, vehicles, and other assets. AWACS aircraft have robust communications, command and control (C2), and battlespace management capabilities. They provide critical informational for both offensive and defensive military actions.

The E-767 AWACS is crewed by two and carries up to 10 personnel to operate the aircraft’s various systems. Its passenger windows are all plugged with aluminum sheeting and the interior is configured to accommodate its systems and personnel. The aircraft has a large circular radome mounted to its rear fuselage, which houses its radar antenna.

The E-767 AWACS measures 159 feet, 2 inches in length, stands 52 feet high, and has a wingspan of 156 feet, 1 inch. It is powered by two General Electric CF6-80C2 high-bypass turbofan engines that each generate up to 61,500 pounds of thrust. The aircraft has an endurance of just over nine hours, a maximum range of 6,440 miles, a service ceiling of 40,000 feet above sea level, and it cruises at 530 miles per hour.
