The F-47 is a single-seat, twin-engine, low-observable, multi-role combat aircraft under development by American aerospace and defense contractor Boeing. Developed to fulfill the U.S. Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, the American military expects that the supersonic F-47 will be the world’s first “sixth generation” fighter aircraft.

The Air Force initiated the Next Generation Air Dominance program to provide a successor to the F-22 Raptor, the Air Force’s fifth-generation fighter that took its maiden flight on September 7, 1997 and entered service on December 15, 2005. As a fifth-generation air superiority aircraft, the F-22 possesses low observable (stealth) qualities, uses advanced targeting systems, and has highly evolved avionics, communications, and precision flight controls.

The F-47, as a sixth-generation fighter, will allow the pilot to perform a tremendous range of mission sets to achieve air supremacy, the highest level of air superiority. The aircraft will have refined low observable qualities, including radar signature, heat signature, visual signature, and electromagnetic spectrum emission signatures, making it extraordinarily difficult for an enemy to detect and track. It will possess next-generation pilot situational awareness systems, including those for the environment and enemy posture and capabilities. It will possess beyond visual range (BVR) systems allowing the pilot to engage enemy targets from long range. It will possess advanced ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) data collections systems for several domains, including air, space, surface domains, and information, including cyberspace.

One of the key standout capabilities of the F-47 will be its ability to operate with a wide range and number of advanced unmanned aircraft systems that the U.S. Air Force calls collaborative combat aircraft, or CCAs. CCAs to be used include the YFQ-42A and the YFQ-44A, both unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). As part of this advanced manned-unmanned teaming initiative, the F-47 will possess advanced computational systems, built around a type of artificial intelligence called deep learning, to synchronize and coordinate the myriad CCA operations and distributed sensor data to provide a unified battlespace picture to the pilot.

The F-47 will be able to conduct several mission sets, including air superiority, interdiction, strike, close air support, forward command control, and communication (C3), ISR data collections, electronic warfare, and cyber warfare.

The F-47 will be constructed using advanced composites and aerospace alloys. It will have a fuselage blended with swept-back wings, incorporate canard foreplanes for high maneuverability, and be tailless.

The F-47 will have a range of more than 1,150 miles, fly using supercruise (without afterburner), and have a top speed greater than Mach 2.
