The FC-31 is a twin-engine, single-seat, multirole military aircraft developed by China’s Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. The aircraft is a fifth-generation fighter comprising low observability (“stealth”), supercruise capability, advanced passive and active sensors with data fusion, high maneuverability, and the ability to carry a range of munitions, including precision guided weapons. The aircraft can perform a wide range of missions, including air superiority, strike, ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) data collections, and close air support (CAS). The aircraft took its maiden flight on October 31, 2012.

The jet features advanced composite construction, a swept trapezoidal main wing, and an empennage that comprises two outwardly-canted vertical stabilizers and all-moving horizontal stabilizers. It has a high-visibility canopy for optimized visual situational awareness and an all-glass cockpit with touchscreen interface. It has six external hardpoints and an internal bay.

It measures 56 feet, 9 inches in length, stands 15 feet, 9 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 37 feet, 9 inches. It is powered by two WS-13 afterburning turbofan engines that each produce up to 12,800 pounds of thrust in military power and 19,600 pounds of thrust under afterburner. The jet has a range of 1,000 miles, a service ceiling of 60,000 feet above sea level, and a maximum cruise speed of Mach 1.8.
