The Su-57 is a supersonic, single-seat, twin-engine, multi-role combat aircraft designed by Sukhoi of Russia. The jet, Russia’s first fifth-generation fighter, includes a series of state-of-the-art innovations including supercruise, low observability (“stealth”) operation, advanced avionics, and thrust vectoring. The jet took its maiden flight on January 29, 2010, and was introduced on December 25, 2020. It primarily serves the Russian Air Force and the Russian Navy and can carry a range of air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons, including missiles, rockets, and bombs.
The Su-57M is the next-generation, upgraded iteration of the Su-57 being developed as part of the platform’s “Megapolis program.” The M variant includes upgraded engines, improved avionics, and improved targeting and weapon systems.
The Su-57M features a blended wing body design with vortex controllers on its leading edge root extensions. This, combined with its flying horizontal and vertical stabilizers and thrust vectoring, gives the Su-57M extremely high performance flight characteristics. The Su-57M is powered by two Saturn izdeliye 30 afterburning turbofan engines that each produce a maximum of 24,300 pounds of thrust in military power and 38,600 pounds of thrust under full afterburner.
