The MFI-17 Safari is a single-engine, two-to-three seat, high-wing monoplane manufactured by Swedish aerospace conglomerate Saab. The company developed the Safari for use as a general utility aircraft and as a trainer for both military and civil users. It took its maiden flight on February 26, 1971 and 462 airframes were manufactured.

The MFI-17 Safari features all-metal construction, a semi-monocoque fuselage, and a strut-braced, forward-swept main wing. Engineers used the forward-swept wing configuration to optimize pilot field-of-view. The aircraft has a fixed tricycle undercarriage, a T-tail empennage, and a cockpit with side-by-side seating. It features a bubble canopy that provides a wide field of view so that pilots can maintain exceptional visual situational awareness.

Rugged and reliable, the MFI-17 Safari can operate from unimproved airstrips as well as larger facilities. Civil applications have included training, touring, and surveying. Military roles have included flight instruction, forward observation, and liaison. Users throughout the world have operated the Safari, with many airframes remaining in service. Although primarily a two-seat aircraft, the modular design of the rear cargo area allows it to be quickly converted to a third seat.

The MFI-17 Safari measures 23 feet in length, stands 8 feet, 6 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 29 feet. It is powered by a four-cylinder Lycoming IO-360-A1B6 aircraft piston engine that generates up to 200 horsepower and turns a two-blade, constant-speed propeller.

The aircraft has a maximum range of 435 miles and an endurance of five hours, 10 minutes. It has a service ceiling of 13,500 feet above sea level and a maximum rate of climb of 825 feet per minute. It cruises at 129 miles an hour, has a maximum speed of 227 miles per hour, and stalls at 66 miles per hour.
