The Hiller OH-23 Raven is a versatile military light observation helicopter that can accommodate two, three, or four people. It is derived from the Hiller Model 360, which was originally designated as the UH-12 ("UH" standing for United Helicopters). The first flight of the UH-12 took place in 1948. Initially designed as a two-seat helicopter with a piston engine, it entered service in the late 1940s and went on to become a widely-used light helicopter for both military and civilian purposes throughout the late 20th century.

The H-23 Raven served as a utility, observation, and MedEvac helicopter during the Korean War. It had various model numbers, including A through D, F, and G. The H-23A featured a sloping front windshield, while the H-23B was primarily used as a helicopter trainer.

The Raven served as a scout helicopter during the early stages of the Vietnam War. It was later replaced by the Hughes OH-6A Cayuse in early 1968.

The UH-12B is a 3-seat, single-engine, light utility helicopter manufactured by American rotorcraft producer Hiller Helicopters. It is a member of the OH-23 Raven family of military helicopters, the prototype of which took its maiden flight in 1948. UH stands for “United Helicopter,” the name of the company prior to becoming “Hiller Helicopters.”

The UH-12B was developed from the H-23B, which took its maiden flight in September of 1951. The UH-12B entered service as a helicopter trainer for the U.S. Navy and quickly earned a reputation for its reliability, excellent performance, and versatility. In the civilian market, the UH-12B was used for a wide variety of applications, including training, search and rescue, and agriculture purposes. The UH-12B was notably used throughout the Alps due to its excellent high-altitude performance. Several remain in flying condition.

The UH-12B features a distinctive bubble canopy, side-by-side seating, dual cockpit controls, and landing gear skids. It has a 2-blade main rotor system and a 2-blade anti-torque tail rotor. It is powered by a vertically mounted 6-cylinder, air-cooled Franklin 6V4-200-C33 piston engine that delivers up to 200 horsepower to the helicopter’s transmission and systems.

The fuselage of the UH-12B measures 27 feet, 11 inches in length and stands 9 feet, 10 inches tall. Its main rotor has a diameter of 35 feet, 3 inches and its anti-torque tail rotor has a diameter of 5 feet, 6 inches. The helicopter has a range of 236 miles, a service ceiling of 10,000 feet above sea level, and a maximum cruise speed of 98 miles per hour.
