3.2/5 (349)

The Yakovlev Yak-18T is a four-seat passenger and utility aircraft developed by Yakovlev. It is widely used as a sport aerobatic airplane both inside and outside the former USSR. It is powered by a 268-298 kW (360-400 hp) Vedeneyev M14P radial engine. Compared with other four-seat light aircraft the Yak-18T is only a little wider and longer but it is much heavier and is equipped with a considerably more powerful engine. The Yak-18T has strong construction, aerobatic capability and responsive handling characteristics and its performance and handling capabilities far exceed its western counterparts. When performing aerobatics, the solid airframe is rated to withstand G-loads from +6G down to -3G. The Yak-18T was designed with versatility in mind so it can land on paved and unpaved surfaces, take off from noticeably short fields and it’s landing capability allows easy access to shorter runways. Its rate of climb is between 1000 and 2000 feet per minute. It is a big, aerobatic capable four-seater with retractable landing gears that can be found throughout the Eastern Bloc countries working as trainer, transport, air-ambulance aircraft, aerial photography platform, pipeline patroller and more.

The Yak-18T is an all-metal, low-wing airplane produced by Russian aircraft manufacturer Yakovlev. The airplane was designed primarily to serve as a basic trainer for pilots of the Russian airline Aeroflot, and also for light passenger and cargo transport. The sturdily built Yak-18T took its maiden flight and was introduced in 1967, and has become notable for its ability to perform high-stress aerobatics.

The 18T is crewed by either one or two, and has seating for five total. It measures 27 feet, 6 inches from nose to tail and has a 36 foot, 7.5 inch wingspan. The airplane, which features a retractable tricycle landing gear and a traditional empennage, is powered by a single 360-horsepower Vedeneyev M14P 9-cylinder radial piston engine. It has a range of 460 miles, a service ceiling of 13,000 feet above sea level, and a top speed of 163 miles per hour.

The Yakovlev Yak-18T is a no-frills performance workhorse that really shines when pilots want to test their aerobatic skills. With a takeoff run of just 650 feet and a landing distance of a little over 800, the Yak-18T can operate out of most any airfield, and once in the air, aviators can really make it shine with maneuvers that generate up to an impressive 6.4 or -3.2 gs.
