The third release in SWS' Van's Aircraft line, the RV-8 is a tandem-seat kit aircraft available in taildragger (RV-8) and tricycle (RV-8A) options. The plane’s spacious cockpit can accommodate pilots up to 6’7” and as big a passenger, while its baggage compartments allow for keeping large amounts of luggage well within the plane’s weight and balance envelope, but this is not where it ends.

Featuring excellent visibility and control balance, the RV-8 is also a great aerobatics aircraft. Coming with a stick and optional throttle and pedals in the rear seat, the RV-8 also makes it possible for a future aerobatics pilot to receive instruction before starting doing it on his or her own! The aircraft’s excellent take-off and climb performance allows it to fly out of very short runways, while it can cruise at up to 220mph, depending on the engine option.

First flown and introduced in 1995, the RV-8 is a small, single-engine kit aircraft created by American aerospace company Van's Aircraft. Its taildragger design comprises a low-wing and a tandem two-place cockpit.

The 21-foot-long RV-8 features a straight main wing with a span of 24 feet, a fuselage-mounted tail unit, a bubble canopy, and is powered by a Lycoming engine. An IO-360 4-cylinder, horizontally opposed piston engine delivers 180 horsepower for a top speed of 214mph. The aircraft climbs at 2,300 feet per minute and has a ceiling of 22,000 feet above sea level, with an endurance of 955 miles.

The RV-8 by Van's Aircraft strikes what may be the perfect balance between basic, intuitive flight and high performance. From its cockpit, aviators can ease into fast, low-level sprints, pull hard into the heights, and then execute loops, rolls, and dives that generate up to +6 or -3 gs.

The RV-8A is homebuilt, single-engine, two-place light airplane from American kit aircraft manufacturer Van’s Aircraft. The RV-8A took its first flight in 1998 and was introduced that same year.

The tricycle-gear variant of the RV-8, the RV-8A, measures 20 feet, 10 inches nose-to-tail, features a low main wing with a span of 24 feet, and a traditional tail unit. The aircraft’s cockpit is a tandem design with a bubble canopy.

The aircraft is powered by a 4-cylinder piston engine that delivers 180 horsepower and can drive a 2- or 3-blade propeller. It can reach cruising speeds of up to 202 miles per hour and it tops out at 212 mph. It has a range of 945 miles, a service ceiling of 22,000 feet above sea level, and it climbs at an impressive 2,200 feet per minute.

The RV-8A by Van’s Aircraft is a sport flyer’s dream. Easy going while slow and low, it can really bite into the air when controlled by pilots seeking to push it hard to its aerobatic limits.
