The classic twin-engine cross country flyer, the Twin Comanche will take you far and wide.
The PA-30 Twin Comanche is a low-wing, twin-engine, piston-powered, general aviation airplane developed and manufactured by Piper Aircraft of the United States. With seating for six, including pilot, it is known for its speed, good range, excellent performance, and passenger comfort. The PA-30 took its maiden flight on November 7, 1962, and Piper introduced it in July of 1963.
Piper developed the Twin Comanche as a dual motor variant of their successful PA-24 Comanche, which the company introduced in 1958. Engineers at Piper felt that the sleek design of the PA-24, known for its reliability and great handling, would be a natural as a twin-engine model. Fitted with two 160-horsepower powerplants, the PA-30 proved an instant success. Pilots know it as a great all-around machine, notably for cross country flying.
The PA-30 features all-metal construction, a standard empennage, and a retractable tricycle undercarriage. It measures 25 feet, 2 inches in length, stands 8 feet, 3 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 36 feet, 10 inches. It is powered by two wing-mounted Lycoming IO-320 4-cylinder piston engines, each of which produces up to 160 horsepower and turns a 2-blade, constant-speed propeller. It has a range of 1,200 miles, a service ceiling of 20,000 feet above sea level, and a climb rate of 1,460 feet per minute. The Twin Comanche boasts a take-off run of 1,530 feet and it lands with a ground roll of 1,870 feet. The PA-30 cruises at 178 miles per hour, has a top speed of 205 mph, and stalls at 70 mph.
