The HP Hampden was a British twin-engine medium bomber that saw extensive use during the first half of World War II. The aircraft took its maiden flight on June 21, 1936 and entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1938. The militaries of several countries operated the Hampden in addition to the United Kingdom, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Soviet Union, and Sweden.

The bomber undertook several mission sets, including aerial reconnaissance, mine laying, torpedo bombing, daytime bombing raids, and nighttime bombing, including the first nighttime bombing raid of Berlin. More than 1,400 Hampdens were produced, and while no examples in flyable condition exist, a small number have been reconstructed to varying degrees.

The Hampden traces its roots to the early 1930s when the United Kingdom’s Air Ministry released a request for a twin-engine, high-performance daytime bomber. The sleek Hampden emerged as a favorite of the Royal Air Force due to its high speed, long range, large bomb load, and low landing speed. Piloted by two, it required a total crew of four and could carry up to 4,000 pounds of munitions, including bombs, a torpedo, or mines. It comprised several machine guns throughout its fuselage for defense against interceptor aircraft.

The Hampden design features a slender fuselage, a cantilever main wing, and a retractable standard undercarriage. The empennage consists of a single horizontal stabilizer and twin vertical stabilizers. The aircraft measures 53 feet, 7 inches in length, stands 14 feet, 11 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 69 feet, 2 inches. During its operational tenure, it was powered by two wing-mounted 9-cylinder, air-cooled radial engines that each could produce up to 1,000 horsepower and turned 3-blade, variable-pitch propellers.

The Hamden had a range of 1,720 miles, a service ceiling of 19,000 feet above sea level, a cruising speed of 206 miles per hour, and a top speed of 247 mph.
