Set in the heart of Gloucestershire, just 4.5 nautical miles south-west of Cirencester, Cotswold Airport (EGBP) is a uniquely atmospheric airfield blending rich RAF heritage with modern general aviation freedom. Formerly known as RAF Kemble, the site occupies a prime position between Cheltenham, Gloucester and Swindon, offering easy access by both road and rail while remaining clear of controlled airspace—ideal for VFR operations and training flights.
Originally constructed in 1936 on the eve of the Second World War, RAF Kemble quickly became a vital hub for aircraft maintenance, preparation and ferry operations across the UK. It played a key role in supporting wartime logistics, with the Air Transport Auxiliary operating from the field and countless aircraft passing through on their way to frontline squadrons. In later years, the airfield gained iconic status as the long-time home of the RAF Red Arrows between 1966 and 1983, cementing its place in British aviation history.
Following the Cold War and military withdrawal in the early 1990s, Kemble entered a new chapter. Reborn as Cotswold Airport in 2009, it has evolved into one of the UK’s most distinctive private aviation hubs. Today, the airfield supports a thriving mix of flying schools, business aviation, engineering facilities and specialist operations, all centred around its impressive 2,000-metre runway capable of handling large aircraft.
Perhaps most notably, Cotswold Airport has become Europe’s leading airliner storage and recycling centre, where retired commercial jets line the apron in various stages of preservation or dismantling—an evocative sight that perfectly captures the airfield’s blend of past and present.
