Earls Colne Airfield is a former Royal Air Force (RAF) station located in Earls Colne, Essex, England. The airfield was built in 1942 as part of the RAF's expansion during World War II. It was used primarily as a training base for fighter pilots. The airfield was initially used by the RAF's No. 11 Group Fighter Command, which was responsible for the defence of London and the southeast of England. Pilots from all over the country were trained at Earls Colne, as well as from the United States, who were part of the Eagle Squadrons made up of American volunteers. The airfield was also used by the RAF's No. 61 Operational Training Unit, which trained pilots on the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane fighters. Today, it is home to the Anglian Flight Centre, Anglian War Birds and the Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance.
