KBFM Mobile International Airport MSFS is a highly detailed scenery of Mobile International Airport in Alabama, United States. This product is compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Mobile International Airport (IATA/FAA: BFM, ICAO: KBFM) is located within the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, approximately three nautical miles south of downtown Mobile. Positioned beside Mobile Bay, the airport combines two long runways with direct access to road, rail, port and industrial infrastructure. Its traffic includes cargo services, aircraft manufacturing and delivery flights, maintenance operations, business and general aviation, charters and occasional military movements.
The airfield originated as Bates Field, Mobile’s first municipal airport, established in 1929. The United States Army Air Corps acquired the site in 1938, after which the city’s passenger operations relocated westward. The facility was developed into Brookley Army Air Field and later became Brookley Air Force Base.
During the Second World War, Brookley grew into a major aircraft overhaul, supply and logistics centre. Its waterfront location allowed aircraft and components to move directly between ships and the base, while extensive workshops supported military operations on a large scale. At its wartime peak, the installation employed approximately 17,000 civilian workers.
The closure of Brookley Air Force Base in 1969 severely affected Mobile’s economy. The property was returned to the city and gradually transformed into a civilian airport and industrial complex. Its long runways, large hangars, extensive aprons and multimodal connections provided an ideal foundation for aircraft maintenance, cargo activity and aerospace manufacturing.
Brookley’s modern transformation accelerated when Airbus selected Mobile in 2012 for its first commercial-aircraft final assembly facility in the United States. A320-family production began in 2015, followed by A220 manufacturing and further expansion of the aerospace campus. Newly manufactured aircraft now share the airport with cargo flights, visiting airliners, corporate aircraft and general aviation traffic.
Passenger service returned temporarily in 2019 through a compact two-gate terminal. This supported plans to transfer Mobile’s principal airline operations from Mobile Regional Airport to the more centrally located KBFM. A new passenger terminal, initially providing five gates with future expansion planned, is now the centrepiece of Brookley’s next transformation.
Today, KBFM combines military heritage, modern aerospace manufacturing, cargo and maintenance operations, waterfront infrastructure and renewed passenger ambitions, creating one of the most varied aviation environments on the northern Gulf Coast.
